Wow! A Volkswagen Scirocco MK1 in a 1978 movie. That would have been a Very new car about the time. Specially in America, when VW introduced the Scirocco in 1977 in NA. I always liked the Scirocco MK1. |

Me too. But I prefer the Mk2 |

Supposedly by the year 2008-09 there is going to be a new Voltswagon Scirocco. |

I wonder why they reuse the old name btw. It is so hard to find names? And why not a Corrado mk2 rather than Scirocco mk3... |

I don't think anyone can think of anything new acutually, there redoing songs, movies and so much more!! |

My first car was a VW Scirocco MK1. It was a wonderful first car. -- Last edit: 2006-12-24 14:06:55 |

According to the DVD special features (on 'Dawn of the Dead'), the Volkswagen was 'borrowed' (free of charge!) from a local dealership (after much begging and pleading, mind you). It was later written-off in a crash on-set (that's why the scene ends a little adruptly in the film) where the production crew quickly learnt that Volkswagen + concrete column = trouble. The best part of this story, though, is that Romero, his production crew and the distributor never paid a CENT. The car was provided free and they never reinbursed the dealership for the loss! Funny or what?! :P |

Still kinda sucks though, it's a nice car and I would love to have the one that was used in the film. |

In fact, The Scirocco was introduced in United States in 1975, the same year of the Rabbit |

I had a 78 Scirocco. Midnight blue and gold interior. Great little car except that is was a magnet for every stereo thief within a 100-mile radius! |

Am I a total idiot when it comes to cars, or is this a hatchback? If it is, then why is it listed as a coupé???:??: |
◊ 2007-08-20 16:11 |
Well, you are right as it is technically a 3-door hatchback. But I think that this car is often considered as "coupé", especially if you compare the shape of the VW Scirocco to the shape of the 3-door VW Golf of the same year. -- Last edit: 2007-08-20 16:11:20 |

I don't see any reason to call the Scirocco a coupé, as it IS technically a hatchback. It's like calling a Cadillac Escalade a "sedan" |

Escalade does not have a sedan shape. The Scirocco has a coupé-like shape and has two doors (+ the hatch, yes). |

If you wanted to be nit picky, its technically a "Lift back" due to the angle of the rear windscreen being less than about 70 degrees and only having part of the rear lip rise up with the rear window but not the actual tailgate so as to preserve body rigidity, sports cars tend to use this design. Hatch backs tend to have the whole tail swing up as well as the rear windscreen and the rear windscreen has an angle of about 70-90 degrees. Note also the Kammback styling that's still popular today. -- Last edit: 2012-11-19 11:34:14 |
