With the hubcap, does it goes for 1996/97 model years? |

No not necessaryily, those hubcaps were used on Vics since about 1989, or 1990. This particular Vic is a 1997, because this is an ex-unit that the production company have brought on the cheap for filming from the NOPD. It is a 97 because of the slight change in the NOPD livery. The solid blue line down the side of the car fades away slighty towards the rear of the vehicle. This minor detail was the change in their livery in 1997, from previous years. |

Those hubcaps first appeared on the LTD Crown Vics on 1988 models and the same basic design continued on until 2002. And good eye with the markings. But actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the vehicle was still in service in this picture. All the markings are there, certainly it hasn't been stripped. And in post-Katrina 2006, I doubt the NOPD would have been willing to sell cars in good shape. |

Thanks for the correction ford guy. I couldn't quite remember if Ford offered them once that particular model (88-91) came out. Yes, I agree with you on that point, I thought they might sell them off to get some money; but, the NOPD were still using them when Katrina hit. So, this shows how strapped for cash they are sadly, so they might have to keep on using 97 models. If this one is still in service, wouldn't they re-paint it with the new markings they have started using since 2006? Or would they just leave it, to save money? Although, I'd suppose they leave the old markings just to save cash again. Did NOPD get much finanical support after Katrina? As, I have seen pictures of newier cars they use, but still some old ones. |

Many larger departments still keep a few of these older model Crown Vics, mostly 1997 models. There's even some Caprice still in service, although VERY rare to find nowadays. I know for a fact that after Hurricane Katrina hit, a few agencies donated some of their older cars to the NOPD. Here's one of the most significant examples: Link to "copcardotcom.fotki.com" The Louisiana State Police also donated hundreds of cars, I think all of them new. These came equipped the same way as the State cars, except with simple markings to identify them as NOPD cars: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3262/2637317214_66403619fa.jpg?v=0 And older cars would not have to be re-painted, simply have the decals removed and put in new ones. I have yet to see older cars still in service with the older or newer decals, so I'm not sure about that. But from the looks of it, the department is re-building itself fairly well. Just for reference, here are the three different markings together: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3136/2637348216_95f2f45737.jpg?v=0 -- Last edit: 2009-04-26 02:40:51 |

I know in Clarke County MS, several of the "county mounties" still use 1993-1994 Crown Victorias. One smaller town police department down there still uses 1988-1991 Crown Vics for their officers...all three of them. |

Thank you ford guy for all the information! Very kind of you, I've learnt something new today. I've seen pics of the New Castle County Vics on flickr recently. The picture didn't have an explaination like on the link you provided, so, I assumed they were movie props! How wrong I was thinking that. From, what I have seen from pictures, I agree with you NOPD is greatly re-developing itself. Thank you Skid, that just amazes that some departments still using vehicles of that age. Are they just used as admin vehicles? Or are they still on patrol? I thought US states set a time period for emgergency vehicles to use from new, until they have to be re-placed, is that right? Althogh, I suppose the department's budget has a big part in it, if they can't afford new cruisers. |

It usually has to do with budgetary reasons, especially in the smaller towns where the cars don't get run too hard. Their reasoning may be "why buy a new Crown Vic when our ten-year-old one is running just fine, especially in times like these?" |

If you're interested in the NOPD, "K-Ville" might be a good show to watch. It was on FOX back in 2007, and only lasted 10 episodes. Streaming episodes can be found at www.hulu.com/k-ville. It would probably be a good show to add to IMCDb. |

It's not a good show...not realistic anyways. |

They patrol. As far as I know, at least with the county cars, they "refreshed" them at one point with new engines and transmissions...it was deemed cheaper than buying new cars. Here's an even better one: My local volunteer fire department still uses an early 1960s Ford F-series fire truck, with bright red paint, gumball flasher lights, and everything. It looks a lot like the one pictured here, except with a standard front bumper - http://www.buffalocreekranchnv.com/images/vehicles_firetruck.jpg -- Last edit: 2009-04-27 07:09:43 |

True. In terms of cars, particularly NOPD Crown Vics, the show was pretty good. |

Yea too true on that point ford guy. Thanks for getting back to me on my question Skid, that doesn't surpise me on the new engines etc. New car in performance, just asethically not! Least they are looking after their units! Plus that is quite crazy about the 60's Ford F-series truck; I'd expect to see that in a Town parade, and not in service. Although, I suppose there is so little cash on offer to volunteer fire departments, it is a shame really. I can't beat that one! Oldest Fire appliance I've seen in my town is 10 years old, and I think it is a reserve unit, plus used for training. As, for police cars, well, the oldest one I've seen lately is six years old. Thanks for the info on K-Ville APS221, I've never seen the show before; I'll give a look. |
