Either Boonacker or Huiskamp seem to be responsible for that 'rouwauto' conversion. |

I think that 'rouwauto' is rather used for the following cars/limousines, the usual Dutch word for hearse, is 'begrafenisauto' or, less formal 'lijkwagen'. |

The follow cars are normally referred to as 'volgauto' as far as I have heard. I had several interesting conversations with Mr. Legters, the boss of Huiskamp Carrosserie, and he mostly uses the term rouwauto to describe the funeral coaches. |

I checked the big Dutch dictionary, Van Dale: Rouwauto (m), auto voor een rouwstoet (car for a funeral procession), so I guess it is used for the hearse and the following cars... Maybe it is rather a professional word, personally I wouldn't use it. Tomorrow I'll attend at a funeral and I'll listen what other people call it. |

I asked several persons at the funeral... Some prefer 'lijkwagen', some 'begrafenisauto', some 'rouwauto'... It might depend on family conventions or regional differences, but at the end I guess that 'lijkwagen' is a bit old fashioned (it can be used for a funeral carriage as well), 'begrafenisauto' is strictly speaking only used for a burial, not for a cremation... So indeed 'rouwauto' might be the most correct. Interesting to see that in the Netherlands there is no real consistancy in the choise of word for hearse... |

Hey, thanks a lot for your research, DynaMike. Das finde ich hochinteressant! Concerning the missing consistancy: You might also call that open-mindedness - at least that's how I consider it. |
