By the way, it's simply CJ-2A. Jeep was a nickname back then. |

BUMP. As can be seen in this advertisement, "Jeep" is a nickname, and is always placed in quotation marks. The official name is simply Willys CJ-2A. (Sorry about the size; I don't know how to re-size.) ![]() -- Last edit: 2011-06-13 23:47:04 |

Thanks for the fix, but could you please do it for all the Willys CJs? |

Summary of Jeep ownership: 1941–1953: Willys-Overland 1953–1964: Kaiser-Jeep (calling themselves "Willys Motors") 1964–1970: Kaiser-Jeep 1970–1987: AMC (w/ Renault controlling production in 1986) 1987–1998: Chrysler 1998–2007: DaimlerChrysler AG 2007–2009: Chrysler LLC 2009–present: Chrysler Group LLC At the time of this ad in late 1945 to early 1946 Willys did not legally own "JEEP" although they had applied for the trademark some years earlier. The idea was possession is 9/10th of the law and they were not backing off. They were granted the trademark in 1950. "Jeep" appears stamped into the body panels for decades. I don't think calling it a nickname is completely accurate. -- Last edit: 2011-06-14 00:47:13 |

IMO we should leave them listed as they are now |

To my knowledge, however the CJ-2A did not have Jeep in it's official model name. |

It seems Universal Jeep and later Jeep Universal were part of the name for decades along with Jeep wagons and Jeep trucks. I am familiar with some of the models but not so much the legal details of company ownership. Open to other comments? The more glaring error on the site is referring to WWII jeeps as a Jeep. This is clearly incorrect but what is the point of stirring it up? Enjoy the site for all the wonderful pics and appreciate the time so many put into it sharing in an automotive hobby. My 2 cents... |
