KITT before renovation was a originally a black/gold Trans Am at the beginning of the pilot episode, Los Angeles Police Detective was played by Larry Anderson, even through the voice was actually overdubbed by David Hasselhoff. The character was shot in the face, and given plastic surgery, Hasselhoff took over the role for the remainder of the series. http://www.fortunecity.com.lavender/poitier/1005/id27.htm -- Last edit: 2008-03-07 04:30:53 |
◊ 2008-03-30 18:46 |
was the black and gold KITT in the pilot episode the same car used in the third film of smoky and the bandit |
◊ 2008-05-21 03:32 |
KITT was originally a black/gold Recaro limited edition Trans Am with 2,000 of them made in 1982. Yes for a fact that Larry Anderson is not standing there. Larry Anderson got into the car, and takes off from the hotel. David Hasselhoff from the point he gets out of the car assumes the acting role as apparent by the shadowy appearence of Michael Long in the desert. |

@MaindrianPace: Little correction... K.I.T.T. before renovation is actually a brand new black/gold 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am and not a Recaro Edition because for an example it don't has the Recaro seats but the optional Viscount bucket seats a.k.a. PMD seats. The 82' Recaro seats came only in charcoal colour. David Hasselhoff and (his fiancée at that time) Catherine Hickland with their own cars in 1983 that Pontiac gave them. And in the last pictures from MaindrianPace you can see Hasselhoff posing in his 83' Recaro Trans Am (the seats are in light tan or beige with leather in the seating areas and headrests but not in charcoal coulour like in 1982). -- Last edit: 2009-07-30 23:44:26 |

The original Trans Am that Michael Long has in the pilot (the black and gold Pontiac Firebird Trans Am) was NEVER KITT! It was just another promotional gimick for Pontiac and the limited edition of the black and gold model. When Michael wakes up from his plastic sugery, and he's now Michael Knight, he at first thinks KITT is his Trans Am...but obviously once he inspects it he realizes it's not. Devon also states that KITT is not Michael Long's old car...but one like it. -- Last edit: 2012-08-22 06:54:13 |

This car must have been a bitch to drive with that goofy steering wheel. |
◊ 2012-12-30 07:35 |
Why?? They only cars that I would think might be "bitches" to drive would be ones from the early-mid 60's and older...as most did not have power steering. However, my first car was a 1966 Mustang, and although it didn't have power steering you got used to it, and learned to maneuver the car. KITT's steering wheel doesn't appear to be hard to manage or handle at all...in fact I would think with his technology the Trans-Am would be a cinch to drive. ![]() ![]() -- Last edit: 2012-12-30 07:37:41 |

If you click on the image to see the full picture and if you look closely, you'll see that there is an arm sleeve of the tan jacket sewed to the driver's seat. And as you look at the whole scene, you'll see that arm sleeve go down from the driver's seat as Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) is entering the car. |

Episode numbers are needed with the various stunt cars and small restyles done over 4 seasons. |

Go and watch "The Raid" (or it's sequel, not sure right now). They have a carchase where they have the camera travel around and through two cars, partly done by two "car-seat-camo"-camera operators and one guy on rollerblades. |

Three brand new 1982 Trans Ams were gifted to the production by Pontiac as product placement. One was used as the hero car, one as a general stunt car, and one as a jump car. All were identical black Trans Ams, with Viscount seats, disk-style wheels, 1982 Crossfire-injected 305s (glimpses of the Crossfire intakes are shown when the hood is up) and automatic transmissions. Not long after production started, it was decided that a fourth car would be needed, so a fourth car was purchased from a local Pontiac dealer's inventory; this is the black and gold stock Trans Am driven by Michael Long in the beginning of the pilot. This car was later redressed as another KITT and used as a second general stunt car. A train full of new 1983 Camaros and Firebirds derailed in California before the start of Season 2, and GM ended up giving these cars to various TV and movie predictions with the understanding that they'd be destroyed. The bulk of KITTs used from Season 2 on were from this group, and sure enough, were destroyed after Knight Rider's cancelation. The fleet's jump car was also (when not a scale model) a VW dune buggy with a rubber shell on it, since the Trans Am jump car was harder to keep in the air and required massive amounts of work after every jump. A few other 1982-1984 cars were purchased and used as backups for the duration of the series. Some were base Firebirds, some had manual transmissions, and some (like the "convertible" car, built by George Barris's shop) had 2.8 V6s. |
