1975 to 1978. |
◊ 2009-10-22 20:54 |
Yeah, I was gonna guess a 77 LTD myself |

If it's '77 LTD II Four-Door Sedan [53D] |
◊ 2009-10-22 21:13 |
No. Not LTD II. That was a mid-sized car with a completely different body. |

Commander 57's right. And by this time all full-size sedans and coupes were nothing but LTD's. |

They still had Custom 500s but they were rare and mostly sold to fleets. |

Yes, for one year; 1975. |
◊ 2009-10-23 05:27 |
So what should we list this as? |

It was not just for 1975, look at this 1977 brochure: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/77ltd/bilder/5.jpg From the research I've done I cannot find even a "base" LTD without a vinyl roof, which leads me to believe this is a Custom 500. -- Last edit: 2009-10-23 12:12:16 |

It is not reasonable to list this car as a Custom 500. Replace with LTD. |

Check the options list, cars in brouchures are often pictured with options. Base LTD didn´t have vinyl roof as standard. The Custom 500 is not mentioned for 1975 or 1976 in Ford brouchures, I suppose they just came as fleet cars as mentioned above. For 1977 they´re back again as base model in the full size range. 1975: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/75ltd/bilder/7.jpg 1976: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/76fords/bilder/3.jpg 1977: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/77ltd/bilder/10.jpg |

According to the "Standard Catalog of American Cars", the 1975 entry states, "The Custom 500 was the base trim level Ford for 1975." and in the historical notes it states, "It was the final season for the long-lasting Custom 500 nameplate." 1976 states, "LTD was the only full-size Ford available to private buyers, as the Custom 500 badge went on Fleet models only." 1977, "As in 1976, the Custom 500 was for fleet buyers only." 1978, "Custom 500 was the fleet model, sold in Canada." So it appears that the only year the Custom 500 was available as a regular model was 1975. As far as production, Ford produced about 89,000 Custom 500 during the 4-year span, versus 1.4 million LTDs. So the Custom 500 during this period are very rare. |

Looking closer on the 77 brouchure, it reads Ford of Canada in the warranty section. That explains the "return" of the Custom 500. |

Well id just like to see a picture of that 1975 Custom 500. And whats written in that Standard catalog of American Cars is somewhat contradictory to the 1977 Ford catalog that DAF has linked so maybe one shouldnt read that catalog as the holy word either. Who knows, the Ford section of the Standard Catalog of American Cars might well have been written in the spirit of Mr Cadillacs 95 percentile reassurance of correctness. |

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Custom_500 . |

I see no picture of a 1975 Custom 500 on that page. |

Here's how NADA lists the non-station wagon full-sized Ford models for the '75 to 78 period: 1975 Custom 500 (4-door only) LTD LTD Brougham LTD Landau 1976 Custom 500 (4-door only) LTD LTD Brougham LTD Landau 1977 LTD LTD Landau 1978 LTD LTD Landau Of course, they would not list Canadian variant models. Burness has no photo of a '75 Custom 500 but in a parenthetical note states 1975 was the last year. |

On the 1977 Canadian brochure that DAF linked to, page 5 on the right shows a Custom 500: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/ford/77ltd/bilder/5.jpg |
◊ 2010-08-09 12:24 |
Well as I said, it sure would be interesting to see an actual picture of a 1975 Custom 500. |

Maybe something along the line of this, no hood ornament and body-side moldings being optional: http://www.geting.se/viewimage/image/257007-1975_Ford_Police-02.jpg http://www.geting.se/viewimage/image/257008-B31639.jpg http://www.geting.se/viewimage/image/257009-1975_Ford_Police-10.jpg |
