This generation of Expedition fell under much scrutiny and criticism during its début, due to its controversial independent rear suspension (IRS) which was the first of its kind in a large full-size SUV (compact and mid-size SUVs had this setup long before) giving the SUV an unusually sophisticated 4-wheel independent suspension system. Critics of the Expedition said the new 4-wheel independent suspension would destroy the SUV’s towing, payload and off road capabilities. We know now this didn’t happen, in fact, the Expedition’s towing capacity jumped to 8,600+ lbs over the old live axle Expeditions 8,000+ lb towing capacity. The 4-speed 4R70W electronically controlled transmission was said to have been programmed to detect when a trailer had been coupled, and would automatically adjust it’s shift points to accommodate the extra load the trailer added to the vehicle. |
