antp, I think we need a new classification for fire trucks as this would be an "Aerial Truck" or "Ladder Truck," not a "Fire Engine." |

maybe just change the title from "Fire Engine" to "Fire Truck" which would include all of them |

Perhaps "Fire Vehicle"? |

I thought Fire Engine applied to all of them... |

An engine pumps water into a fire. These trucks have a different purpose. |

Well but still, isn't fire engine the generic word for them all whether with a ladder or a proper water pump? I mean, if go out and ask someone (speaking English obviously) what this is (pointing out to this truck) what will they say? "it's a truck with a ladder" or "it's a fire engine/truck" ? |

If you want to be more generic about it, what we could use for all is simply "Fire Truck," or if we want to sound a bit more official, a "Fire Apparatus." There's going to be different classifications. Some people you may ask may not know the difference and will refer to them all as Fire Engines. But "Fire truck" seems to be the most common classification. -- Last edit: 2009-11-09 01:25:56 |

You could refer to them as "Fire Apparatus," but that might also mean utility trucks, ambulances, fire chief's cars, and what not. |

This is a late 80s E-One fire truck. I think it might have a pump installed on it so technically it is an Engine. The term for this is a Quint. |
◊ 2009-11-09 04:28 |
If E-One is the make, do you know what the model would be? |

The purpose of that category is to include all big trucks used by firemen, and not smaller cars like vans etc. I do not know what would be the correct term in English. |

I know, I understand. The consensus seems to be that it should be either "Fire Truck" or "Fire Apparatus." |

So...no change then? It would have been nice to have at least received a definite answer. |

I missed your comment - ok for Fire truck ![]() |
