It is a backup light above the taillights, When the type 2 was redesigned in 1968 with the larger rectangular side windows and one piece windshield, It continued to use the backup lights above the taillights design until 1972 when the taillights were lengthened and redesigned to include the backup lights as well as new Amber turn signal lights into them, The engine compartment door was also redesigned in 1972 as well.
