Volkswagen Bay-Window Campmobiles are nice, but I like them a lot better with the raised roofs instead of the pop-up ones. |

@stu: it's a 1972. Only in this model-year the had the new front and air-vent in the back pillar in combination with the old bumpers. It's not possible to mount the old bumpers on a 1973+ T2b, because the whole chassis under the front was changed. @rljuna2: no. 1973+ had the new bumper. @max1349: Westfalia was just of the many manufacturers of VW Typ2-camper conversions. VW itself had't made own campers. I'm not sure, if this one was made by Westfalia, too. The flower-stickers are "fakes" IMHO .gif ";)") They shall look like the very popular flower-stickers of the dishwashing detergent "PRIL" -every German or Austrian child from the 70ies knows it- but they haven't the authentic design.  |

Ingo, I thought the indcator above the headlights are introduced in 1973 model year. If this is 1972 model year, the indicator would be under the headlight. Comments  |

@rljuna2: for a few months there was a "hybrid"-version, which had the old body, but with several parts from the newer model. The 1973+ T2b had the safety-front, with the new bumpers and stronger iron-bars underneath (for example to pass the US-laws )This T2 above has definetely the old chassis - but the new front and the new-style air-intakes. I would say, this specific car was made in the late spring/early summer 1972. VW had depleted the old chassis, but some newer features are sill produced, so they mixed it. Usually VW had changed the models during the summer-holidays. But often not totally. This is not the only example  Volkswagen has done things like this several times. So in Summer 1972 for example the had also produced K 70ies with strangely mixed parts. Old chassis with newer body-parts, as with the T2, too. Really worse it was, when a model was dropped out. After they were out of the official range, but when still a few were cobbled with the left-over parts, they had in the factory. So all the last 800 K 70, made between Dec 1974 and March 1975 (official last day was the 1st of February 1975), were stranged mixtures of parts of all model-years and the trim-lines. And the export-versions, too. For the last dozens of K 70 they had no "normal" front fenders any more, so they took the "Italy/Danmark/Norway"-version with the hole for the side-indicator - and have put black plastic-caps on the holes. The very last ones had "Swedish bumpers" (for the lamp-washer-system) - with extra made "chrome" (in fact faked plastic-chrome) caps for the nozzle-holes. And the T2 and the K 70 aren't the only examples. the freaks for other models will have other examples, too. |

P.S. Was this scene from an episode made in 2006? I guess so, because there is the little German flag on the roof, which was become extremely popular for the Football World Cup in 2006.  |

Later on they had been a bit more professional - and have offered "special editions". Indeed, many special trim-lines, Volkswagen (and Audi, too) has offered, were released shortly before this model-version had ended. They tamped some extras into the old-year-version and have offered it for a bargain-price. So the most 1987/88 built VW Passat [32B] were special models as "Trophy" and "Trend" - basic trim-lines, but with features from the GT or the GL, as tinted windows, bigger wheels, rubber stripes around, roof-rack-bars, etc. When I had my 1987 32B-Variant, I had a look on these cars, and I've seen, that mine was one of the last real GT's. The others had been just "pimped" basic ones, sold as special models. Once I had a 1984 Audi 80 SC [B2] as a winter-car (sold for 50 DM, approx.25 € to Siberia  ). The "SC" was a special trim line, released in Spring 1984 (in Summer the facelifted B2 came out). It was just a simple 75 hp, 1.6 liter standard-Audi 80 (4000 in the USA) - but with tinted windows, plush seats and a radio). |

Well Ingo its not the "between" Model T2a to T2B, because these Model had the new backlights and the old frond with the old bumpers (Typ 2a/b);very rare. This one has the new (T2b) front with the old bumper, look at the stripe over the bumper! And the wheels of Typ2b. @stu: I had discussion about the aftermarket conversion for in between model year at /vehicle_322465-Chevrolet-Express-2002.html . So this is not the only thing going on on each manufacturer done that to save money during model year changeover... |

It could be possible, if the car would be a non German Production car (I dont know what they manufactured in Brazil these days), but this one is -quiet sure- a German T2, so this bumpers are not original... -- Last edit: 2010-08-31 13:46:49 |

 The question is indeed, how the have mounted the bumpers. The whole construction of the 1973+ safety-front is different. AFAIK ever single part is different, also the bumper-holders. |
