I assume these are taxis. All three that go by in the background are missing the front passenger door for some reason though. |

Austin FX3 Taxi. The driver has a single seat, the area to his left is for luggage and the installation of the taximeter. There never was a front nearside door on this model. |

Austin FX3. Until the advent of the FX4 all London taxis lacked a front passenger door and seat; as you can see from the r/h taxi, this area was a luggage compartment. |

I think this happened surprisingly rarely. A leather strap was provided to retain luggage, and anyway cabbies were pretty handy at loading it; I've seen FX3s taking Hyde Park Corner on the door-handles without anything falling out ![]() |
