In the movie they say it was especially built for a famous Bullfighter (with a high roof ..so that he could stand up to take applause from the crowds.!) ...and that the car had previously won the concours d'elegance.!

And then they destroy it? What a shame!

It looks like they destroyed this car-but I am sure it appears in the TV film series 'Scotland Yard' in an edition called Crime of Honour which was filmed in 1958. It is meeting place for the detective and a witness. I doubt there could have been two such cars.

Once, I cannot remember where, I saw a promotional photo from the time of the movie's release that featured the Hispano-Suiza with signs saying that it was the very car from the movie. I've just re-watched the scene where it is destroyed, and I think it could have been done with a full-sized sheet-metal mock-up.

The car was in fact not a Hispano-Suiza, but a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost taxi made up as a Hispano-Suiza. Source: http://www.fernhouse.com/book-pages/hd1919.html Although the Author states at the end that he does not believe his old car was the one destroyed in the movie - if you compare the windshield frame, fenders, and cowl of the movie car - they are identical to the ones of the pictured Rolls.

SD 6295 = YELLOW AND GREEN 1921 ROLLS-ROYCE OTHER SALOON
Tax Not taxed for on road use
MOT No details held by DVLA
Vehicle make ROLLS ROYCE
Date of first registration 14 November 1921
Cylinder capacity (cc) 6283cc
Vehicle status Taxed and due
Vehicle colour YELLOW

This plate data suggests a 1921 date rather than 1919 (but early UK dates pre-1923 often have inconsistencies) and is vague about the car's current state. But the fact that a computerised record exists means that SD 6295 remained alive for a long time after the 1953 film date and may still be around today, maybe in a museum or static collection.

The more reason, Basil, to have those 'Scotland Yard Mysteries' on the Database. One or two other Lustgarten series are listed, like 'Scales of Justice'.
Another series of that period with the occasional vintage interest was 'The Four Just Men'.
