Here are the apparent sources of these pictures: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/graphics/saint4.jpg http://www.bilnorge.no/export/bb_17026.jpeg They are not the original P1800, they are a later 1800S -- Last edit: 2006-03-06 22:35:06 |

I changed the main picture here since it was of one of the 1967 cars that appear later in the series. Here´s a capture from Ep 5:06 where the earlier 1800 S appears for the first time in colour. It´s probably a facelifted 1963-64 model with bumpers and wheels from a 1965-66 model according to the article above. But since it´s not absolutely certain that it´s the same car that appeared in the black/white episodes, it´s better to keep it as a 1965 model since it has got those features.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I had a white 1962 and cried for a week when it got wrecked by a drunk. Then I restored a 1972 green one and it got run over by a highschool kid. Perhaps I will get up the nerve to fix another one. |

Early Volvo P 1800 were assembld around 1961 near Jensen plants in UK,on Volvo's order;when they in 1963 got the denomination P 1800 S,that means were Swedish-made(S=Sweden,not Sport as came guessed sometimes) PS Initial layout done by Frua of Turin |

There were 3 cars that played ST1 in the Moore series. Volvo also supplied interior pieces for the set interior mock up. First red then black when the cars changed. This comes from Bill Krzastek who owns NUV 648E. Jensen built P1800 (originally registered as 71 DXC) is used in the first 38 episodes("The Good Medicine" is the last. The Swedish built 1800S(originally registered as 77 GYL) was used from episode 39 ("The High Fence") on ,however, 71 DXC was still used by the second unit for filming a few scenes. 77GYL had it's cow horn bumpers replaced in episode 61 ("The Frightened Inn-Keeper")with the straight bumpers and it's grille replaced to update the car to current Volvo specs. This is the famous episode where the Volvo is blown-up (off camera) and Simon gets a "new car". Not really as explained above. This car (77 GYL)was used for the rest of the 71 b&w episodes. Of particular interest is that the Jensen built 71 DXC is also used for new scenes in this episode. It now is fitted with bullet shaped fender/wing mirrors. This was presumably done as Mr. Moore used this P1800 for his personal use. When 77 GYL was introduced, the mirrors were added to the older car as this was now Mr. Moore's primary car. As an aside, a friend of mine used to live near Elstree Studios (where 'The Saint' was filmed) and he used to see Mr. Moore driving to work in the 1800! When the color episodes began (a few months later), it is presumed that 77 GYL was used until it was replaced by my car, the 1967 1800S (NUV 648E). This occured in the episode "A Double in Diamonds" and was used until the end of the series. This car has the black interior and the later straight chrome trim along the side of the car as well as the Minilites(although 77 GYL wears the Minilites for 3 episodes before it was superceded by NUV 648E). A sister car (NUV 647E)was also provided for Mr. Moore for his personal use. The UK Volvo site claims it had a red interior but no one has been able to confirm this. It seems unlikely. One other item of interest, in the episode "Legacy for the Saint", if you freeze frame very carefully, you can see the Jensen built 71 DXC (with it's wing mirrors) racing down the road. This is the only color footage of 71 DXC. -- Last edit: 2012-01-30 23:12:28 |
