Larry David's car during Series 2-4, Larry actually drives one in real life (he's married to an environmental activist) or at least used to, it was given away in some competition to raise money for enviromental awareness.

He should buy a VAG diesel. Better fuel economy, more reliable, last longer, and easier to maintain.

Some small cars like the VW Lupo actually have better fuel economy than the Prius. The Lupo 3L gets an incredible 78 mpg (US gallons) whereas Prius only gets a fuel economy of about 46 mpg, not much better than small hatchbacks but to Americans that's an amazing fuel economy. Although the tiny Lupo probably isn't sold in America, but that's the kind of thing these environmentalists should buy if they really care about fuel economy (although the Prius is the most fuel efficient car in the US, all the tiny superminis aren't available there). But then the Prius utilizes a new kind of technology so people are probably embracing it for that, hoping it would develop it they give their business.

The Citroen C1 diesel is up there too. There's a bit of 'oh look at me, I'm green' about the Prius. It's actually rather poor on the open road because of the weight of the batteries.

It really has that caring, green image in America (and it has better fuel economy than anything else on the US market, which is flooded with gas-guzzlers), but I wonder how many Europeans have cottoned onto the fact that some their cars are actually better for fuel economy. Jeremy Clarkson criticized it because of this fact, also for it's slowness and high price (because it has all this technology).

And whole life environmental costs are high too, taking into consideration energy used in manufacture and disposal.

Actually it doesn't, that's the saddest part. Hell, the 1980s vintage Chevrolet (Isuzu) Spectrum got roughly the same figures.

These are environmentalist fad cars, nothing more.

So which current American cars have better fuel economy than 46mpg?

I think people who have the means like to support the Prius because they see it as a possible way foward from traditional combustion engines, even if the current Prius doesn't quite have the best fuel economy in the world.

I assume you mean "current cars in the American market." And the answer is none of them. That's because modern cars, on the whole, get lousy gas mileage. The Toyota Yaris gets nearly the same MPG, however, for half the price.

The only reason people here buy the Prius is to look like they're making a difference. It's fashionable to look like you're doing something about "Manbearpig" by driving a really ugly, substandard automobile.
