And this Elan is also driven a lot by the main character, so this must have to be 4 star's. |

it's a 1966 model, otherwise its registration would finish with a "C" instead of a "D". (The white S2 Emma Peel used from 65 to 66 had a "C") This S3 isn't a coupé, and it is a SE (Special Equipment) version. -- Last edit: 2006-03-07 14:36:35 |

The first episode to be filmed for the fifth season was 'The Fear Merchants', listed here as 5.02 as it was the second episode to be transmitted. This was filmed in September 1966. Therefore, the car is only 1967 by the model year. |

I remember seeing the build book for this car and its from summer '66. It's a four bolt crank, rope seal motor and it's a pre-airflow. It's a high spec standard car, not an SE, though it has knock-on wheels an sill trims, but it doesn't have wheel arch indicators or SE badges. In one episode the engine is shown, it has a blue cam cover - a standard motor, the SE's were green. I've known this car since 1984. I am a sad train spotter. |

Survives after recent restoration - Link to "www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk" . SJH 499D is a blue 1966 Lotus Elan with a numberplate first registered in Hertfordshire ... was first used on the road on 1 September 1966." - suggests a factory car from Lotus in Cheshunt. Sept 66 is a few months after S3 launch; it does not have S3 wing indicators but lots of Avengers and Elan forum chat, which seems clear that it is S3. |

Update: The car was sold at Silverstone Auctions, Warwickshire on 24-25 February, 2023 for $196,739 including fees. Elan S3, SN 456114, 1558 c.i. I-4, 2x2 bbl, 4-speed. According to the auction catalog (so don't blame me if it is incorrect), After filming it was given to Miss Rigg. Went to the U.S. At some point before returning to the UK. Was at the "Cars of the Stars" museum in Keswick until the collection was disbursed in 2011. Then to Dezer Collection/museum in Miami. Bought by Piddington collection in 2013, who restored it. Said to be in its original colour, "Jaguar Opalescent Blue". Likely, the most famous Elan in the world. -- Last edit: 2023-07-03 01:47:46 |

Fascinating! Despite loving most UK shows especially of this vintage, The Avengers wasn't something that was on TV in my area until the 1990s, though I was interested in it and had books on it before ever seeing an episode. I still haven't seen many episodes as it just got campier, and campier, but the cars are unquestionably mouthwatering! I wasn't aware that the color was a Jaguar paint. I need to do my research! |
