Ford Granada 2.8i S with TRX alloys. Extremely rare even back in 1978! |

This 2.8iS was supplied by Ford as a member of its press fleet, as are all the leading character cars in the movies and tv series. This is a very early model in Strato Silver and was also used in later episodes of the final series of the tv show and was prominently featured by Ford in contemporary road tests. It is also belived to be the car used in the title sequence of series four, albeit with what were quite obviously false number plates as the model was at the time of filming, yet to reach the showrooms. What better way to launch your new model than in the living rooms of 12 million people? Sadly, this is another car that is not known to survive, despite being the youngest of the Sweeney cars. Very shortly after its 15 minutes of fame, the car was exported... -- Last edit: 2007-01-19 21:21:53 |

Very early Volvo 340 in the background as well probably with that weird auto gearbox. |

My first ever car I bought in 1984 (at 18yrs old) was a 1979 Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia Auto which was replaced by a 1981 2.8 Injection Auto. I loved the shape of both of them but, now, I think the earlier pre’81 cars are the purer and slightly better looking car. I always loved the stance of the injected models in their metric wheels though. My query about the Ford press fleet 2.8iS also used in the Sweeney programs and Sweeney 2 is why the central B Pillar is body colour silver in the film but in more recent pictures of the car that have materialised on the net, the B Pillar is now satin black. The pillar on my 1979 model was black so I wonder whether the pillar was only silver on VERY early pre-production models?? |

The car seen on the net in recent years is not vhk 491s it is vhk481s. The owner has fake plates he puts on it for shows. Theresa few differences to the original. The b pillar is black and the wheels are chrome instead of silver...I don't know about the inside. I am hopefully shipping the original car from Germany soon to restore it sometime, to be finished by 2023. |

See here for "491S" in Sweeney series. No record now for 491S, but these comments on page 1 of a thread list of Ford VHK press cars: "VHK 481S 1978 FORD GRANADA MK2 2.8i S Date of Liability 01 12 1986 Date of First Registration 01 08 1977 Year of Manufacture 1977 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2792CC Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour GREEN" with b&w picture from CAR magazine Dec 77 issue test against Citroen CX. "VHK 491S 1978 FORD GRANADA MK2 2.8i S STRATO SILVER 7 episodes of series 4 & Sweeney 2 film. Exported out of UK June 1978" and on page 2 "I saw VHK 481S at Wheels Day in 2014, wearing 491S plates." ... and comment here that "VHK 481S was originally a green 2.8i S Ford press car" supporting comment above. |
