Freelander 2/LR 2 uses a full-time Haldex four-wheel drive system. It normally routes torque to the front drive wheels, but sends torque to the rear drive wheels when traction loss is detected, adjusting the torque distribution as needed. This is a typical characteristic of an active on-demand four-wheel drive system. It utilizes a software controlled infinitely variable multi-plate clutch coupling (center differential) to allow rotational speed difference between the front & rear drive wheels (needed when making turns, left or right) and to transfer torque. Terrain Response can lock the torque distribution (depending on what mode its in, "Sand mode" for example) for a locked 50/50 torque distribution, which is needed for off road use. Like most modern 4x4s, however, the Freelander 2/LR 2 lacks low range off road gearing. |
