I agree. The uncommon trunk area makes me think it is the 1928 S 26/180 Boattail Speedster, coachbuilt by Murphy, once owned by the Marx brothers. |

Could this be the same car? - Link to "www.autoblog.com" - I suppose it is possible. Add fenders and a top and you could be right. |

I think you are right. The Marx Brothers car appeared also in the movie "Sylvia Scarlett" (not listed yet on imcd, but see infos at http://www.goodingco.com/stories/pebble_beach_debut). I've found a clip from that movie showing the car. It looks exactly the same as the car in "Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo". Watch at 0:28: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs6pR94ZA-c). The car is called 1928 Mercedes-Benz S Boattail Speedster. -- Last edit: 2010-11-27 10:35:08 |

I guess the discrepancy in dates - 1927 and 1928 - is that the chassis was probably built later in 1927 and did not get bodied until sometime in 1928. |

This car was delivered to the New York as a chassis in December 1927. The car was purchased from MBZ in Germany by a man in Santa Barbara by trading in his "Bugatti race car" and cash. MBZ of New York increased the HP before sending it to California. The owner in Santa Barbara upon receiving the chassis sent it to Walter Murphy Coach works in Pasadena where the boat tail body was built. It is titled as a 1928. It was sold last year at Pebble Beach. It returned this year to take a best in class as well as a most elegant open car. The car is beautiful and powerful. The last owner before taking it to Pebble Beach put the car in the air from going so fast and had it crossed up going around corners; what a fun ride; the best. You can see this car by looking up the Gooding auction at Pebble Beach 2010. You might find it on the 2011 Pebble Beach website. |
