IMDB says this not a US Abrams Tank but a modified L1 Leopard, a German tank. It certainly doesn't look much like an Abrams, it looks too small.

I'm wondering whether to give this four stars since it provides probably the most memorable sequence in the film, which is a catalyst to the rest of the plot.

If it is often seen (or at least for some time in the movie), as it seems important, I guess it deserve 4 stars, yes

It really looks like modified Leopard, compare it to this picture of Finnish Leopard 2 A4:

It gets a five minute scene of considerable action. All the battle tanks in this scene seem to be Leopards.

How should this be listed, name wise?

It is the Leopard 1A5, produced by Krauss-Maffei. The production of the first version started in 1965, the A5 version is an upgrade of earlier versions which took place in 1986-92.

In this picture I cannot see any modifications made for the film.

They basically put body panels and stuff onto it to make it look more like an Abrams. In DVD Commentary the director explains that he had a hard time getting certain hardware and even used wooden cutouts as background vehicles in some scenes. There's no way the US Army would given them anything for this film as it portrays the US military in a very bad light and this isn't really a big budget film, it was funded by Filmfour whose production branch has since gone out of business.

In the small images you can see that the side skirts are different and the half circle shaped thing on the turret has been added. Otherwise it is pretty standard.

After having seen the movie, I do not think that it deserves four stars. The scene is quite short, three stars are enough. But if you (G-MANN) disagree, you can restore its four-star rating (I changed it as you hesitated at first).

That's alright, 3 stars is OK ;)
