There were lots of similar Fiat 600s elaborated by Italian coachbuilders, otherwise in crisis... People bought them because between '55 and '60 the time between the order of a new 600 by Fiat and the delivery was abotu 18 months. For such elaborated derivatives, the time was about a month, but they cost a bit more. |

Interesting. How were the coachbuilders able to sidestep the waiting list? |

I presume, fewer people were able to buy them, due to the higher price, secondly to the fact that these cars weren't wellknown, and, most important, only in larger towns available... A minor request caused more chance to get the car quicker, as Fiat, by contract, had already sold to the coachbuilders the naked bodies in a sufficient numbers. Fiat itself, when offered the "Trasformabile" (or sunroof), could offer a lighly more expensive car with about three or four months in the waiting list. Think also that Italy was at the time a society of fast changes in which, a lot of people wanted to buy a car for the first time, and could not afford even the standard Fiat 600 they were ordering, and, therefore were not willing to pay a penny extra. Some people did a mistake buying a car they couldn't afford and were forced to sell it, being quite lucky, since, with such a long waiting list, could ask about the same price of a new one. this happened to my mother when she bought in 1957 a 10 months old '56 600 of a nurse. She could buy a new one for about ten pounds more, but she should have been willing to wait untill the end of 1958... |
