I can only find Aerodeck as EX and EXi in late 80s - no trace of GX. |

I assume a typo on the DVLA database then. I have seen worse. Including a kit car that had the actual make spelt wrong on the registration. |

Talking of Aerodecks, does anybody know anything about the design originally being commissioned by Reliant (from Ogle?? or someone else??) as a follow-up to the Scimitar GTE, but being rejected and then bought up by Honda who adapted it to the oily bits of the Accord. There was also a similar rumour about the Citroen BX originally being a Reliant reject. |

If I recall correctly the bit about the BX came up on the forum. I don't know anything of the Honda story though. See also the 1998 Renault Master originally being a replacement for the Freight-Rover. However, LDV didn't have the money so scrapped the program to just reskin the Freight-Rover to make the Convoy. Renault stepped in and bought the design. |

Here is a pic of the Reliant prototype that inspired the BX: http://forum.imcdb.org/forum_topic-5060-39785-car_game.html#p39785 |

There was also the Daewoo Matiz, originally a 2 door proposal (by IDEA??) for a Fiat Panda replacement. And Chrysler-Simca rejected Matra's proposal which they then passed to Renault for the original Espace. |

I don't believe it. Why would Honda go through the hassle of buying an external design and adapt it to the CA Accord, when they already have a hatchback that looks a bit like a modern shooting brake : the 1984-87 Civic hatchback. Someone at Honda may have been inspired by ye olde Scimitarre GTE when designing the Accord Aerodeck, but suspecting more than that would be close to a conspiracy theory, IMHO. You're thinking about the ItalDesign Lucciola. It wasn't a proposal for a Panda replacement, but rather Giugiaro's entry for an italian design showcase set up by Fiat for the launch of the Cinquecento, in late 1991. Eight design studios and coachbuilders were selected, including the usual suspects (Pininfarina, Bertone, ItalDesign, Zagato, I.DE.A) but also lesser known names such as Stola, Coggiola and Boneschi. Some entries looked rather meh, as if they gave the job to a trainee : a covertible here, a beach pickup there, and a mini taxi. By all accounts, the Lucciola was the most interesting, and production-compatible proposition. Here's an article about the entries : Link to "thethinkersgarage.com" |
