It’s an 1983-1984 model, and appears to be in Scottsdale trim with the optional front appearance package. Most likely has the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission. A rather handsome brute of a ambulance. The rear automatic locking differential (ALD) was not available (as far as I have studied) on the dual rear wheeled trucks. Probably had something to do with the extra set of tires, and the stress that a differential lock would put on the rear axle. However, a rear limited-slip differential (LSD) may have been available. But I haven’t been able to confirm. It does not seem logical that GM would allow only a conventional open differential to take up residence in the rear axle on a work oriented vehicle. Perhaps GM thought the heft of the truck would force the dual rear wheels to find traction in even the worst of conditions. All rounded-line Chevrolets did have the nickname "Heavy Chevy", and for good reason. |
