I'm pretty sure it's a Valiant of some kind. |

unknown Valiant? Have I missed something here? Could it be anything else but Plymouth? |

Sure about Plymouth? This was the in Europe most uncommon Chrysler-brand, and several Plymouth-models were sold here as Dodge, but mainly as Chrysler. Oh, and weren't some Valiants assembled here, in Belgium, Switzerland or Sweden? As we see at old Swedish movies, there were several police-Valiants. P.S. In Germany there was never any official import of any Valiants, neither of Plymouth at all. -- Last edit: 2011-03-07 11:30:55 |

What I'm talking about, is that all Valiant Polis on the base are listed as Plymouths. |

Ah. And which of these range were assembled in Europe, and where? |

Where did DAF555's quote come from? The allpar link is vague about when assembly stopped, but suggests that ANA may have still been assembling some Plymouths up to 1976, with police Valiants continuing alongside Saab builds and "the police Valiants had extra heavy duty Swedish operation equipment, including special Saab car seats — heated when Saab introduced heated seats." suggests parallel assembly. |

I don´t remember where it was said, but there were no cars assembled in Sweden after that point. ANA in Nyköping did however special equip cars, like policecars. 1976 would be correct as far as I remember, the last Valiants came to Sweden about that time. Assembly for swedish market was mainly american, but a few years around 1970 they came from Holland according to a source I have, don´t know exact years though. |

Atom's ANA quote is amazing for its coverage - may be worth more investigation and linking to other references (eg was the 1976-7 Lancia episode something to do with the Delta being sold as the Saab 600 in Sweden - vague memory along those lines). I've nothing further to add on Valiants, but definitely intrigued by "Simca 1954-60, Hillman 1965-69, Sunbeam 1965-69". If it means Rootes assembly, this is totally new to me, but it may mean distribution?? As for Simca, wiki says "The Simca 1100 was produced in different places; in Sweden, local production was handled by Phillipsons, on the same assembly lines that made Mercedes-Benz cars" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simca_1100 - Phillipsons seem to have been competitors for ANA but according to allpar were the first Swedish assemblers of US Chrysler group cars from 1931. -- Last edit: 2011-03-07 18:03:49 |

To begin with Philipssons, they did have all distribution of Chrysler Corp. vehicles and some assembly of them up till 1937 modelyear. After that it was decided by Chrysler to split up distribution to get better sales, so De Soto and Plymouth went to ANA in Nyköping instead. Chrysler and Dodge were kept by Philipssons and assembly was in Stockholm. After the war there were an another importer as well, that I for the moment don´t remeber the name of, but most Chrysler corp. vehicles were either imported or assembled by ANA. Philipsson did get the dealership for SAAB when production started, and sold them up till 1959 models. SAAB had grown much during these years and wished to handle the distribution themselves. They came to an agreement with ANA and bought their facilities and distribution net, effective 1960, all assembly of foreign cars ceased and the dealership of Simca went to Philipssons to replace SAAB for them. ANA kept importing other cars, that were not competing with the SAAB´s, like the Rootes vehicles. But no assembly. In the 70´s both SAAB and Volvo needed a small car to sell, especially after the energy crisis, and developing costs were to heavy for both these small manufacturers. Volvo began cooperation with DAF, and SAAB turned to Lancia. The Lancia cooperations first result was indeed the SAAB-Lancia 600, there had been some involvment by SAAB in the development, after that the SAAB 9000 came that shared platform with several other italians deriving from Fiat. |
