They were indeed advanced cars, but to me they always seemed homely compared to their contemporaries.
(Of course, they look great compared to today's vehicles!)

The Airflow was like the PlayStation 3 or Dreamcast of cars. It had high-tech gear on board but the people wasn't that arsed to buy such an expensive piece of engineering.

I think they made Kit's dad have the 'Flow as his personal sled to reflect their financial status before the Kittredges were affected by the Depression.
