Article in Classic & Sportscar (October 2010) says 3 roadsters with onscreen registration J 1610 were used during the show's 10 year production run, with the 1st being a leased locally-owned 1947 1800, used only in the 1st series and the title sequences of at least the 2nd series. However there is also a reference in the article to it being sourced in Yorkshire. The 2nd and 3rd cars were 2-litres bought by the BBC as cheaper than leasing. A follow-up letter in the Dec 2010 issue of C&S from the son of the former owner of the 2nd car says there were only 2 cars used. The 2nd was a white 2-litre [KLX 322] restored in the 1970s in the West Midlands and bought by the BBC in February 1985 and resprayed maroon. Apparently the 2 cars can be distinguished on film as the 2nd car had red upholstery and a winged radiator mascot; the 1st car has grey upholstery in the C&S article and has been restored twice since the series. There are also rumours reported in the article that a Jaguar engine note was used on the TV soundtrack "to make it sound fruitier" than the Triumph's "parp". BTW dating any Channel Isles registrations is apparently impossible as numbers from scrapped or exported cars were reissued out of sequence as they became available again. -- Last edit: 2010-11-04 17:38:29 |

interesting...interview with john Nettles (2009) who played Bergerac stated.......only 1 car used throughout the ten year series...it was ran into the ground...wouldnt start....had to be pushed around for most shots and after 10 years it was auctioned for Children In Need and fetched £34,000...the guy who bought it promptly contacted john Nettles and gave him an earful as the car failed its MOT and wondered if he could do anything about it!! even the shows director states that only 1 car was used!. due to the narrow roads and high hedges,Nettles deemed the car dangerous to drive as the driver view was not good, also the long bonnet meant he had in some cases to pull well into the road before turning at junctions.both Nettles and the director confirm that the car engine was dubbed on in post production....using the engine sound from a Mk2 jaguar. -- Last edit: 2010-12-23 13:16:04 |

Which is slightly ironic as the 1776cc engine was first used in the 1938-49 Jag 1½ Litre (although built by Standard for Jaguar as a special commission) |

The Standard engines were of depressing side valve configuration, whereas the SS and Jaguar variants from the 1938 SS Jaguar 1 1/2 litre onwards until the XK were pushrod operated overhead valve engines with the cylinder head engineering done by Harry Weslake. Standard made a good solid bottom end and Weslake turned that into a useful engine. Weslake was involved in much else, including Merlin engines, engines for speedway, and formula 1, and if Wiki is correct, the BMC A Series cylinder head. -- Last edit: 2015-06-22 18:42:09 |

^ vague memory that Weslake tuned some early A-H Sprites which were successful alongside rivals such as Downtown and Speedwell. |

If you want to learn more about the SS Jaguars, there is an excellent article by Paul Skilleter in the July issue of "The Automobile". Weslake achieved nearly 50% increase, 70 bhp to 103 bhp, by his new cylinder head design for the rather pedestrian Standard engine. |

There are definitely at least two very distinct cars in the role. You can tell by the shape of the rear, and the lighting arrangements: one had the D lights common on pre-war cars either end of the rear number plate; the other had separate, round lamps for the indicators and the brake/rear night lights. Legend has it that the cars were switched in 1985, but there is certainly a car with the separate lights in one of the first series episodes, and the D lights are clearly visible in the later episode, "Offshore Trades", of which one of our contributors has kindly provided a still. |
