Yes. They were quite popular in the nineties but since then they have not sold as well. Indeed there is a maroon 1999 right outside my house at the moment. |

I think Proton was (and still is) only active in the UK, and for a short time in Germany before they decided they weren't selling enough cars and stopped selling cars in the country. Going by the markings, it's supposed to be an Australian police car - and some of the film was shot in Australia. However, some other cars in the film have Malaysian number plates, so perhaps this scene was filmed in Malaysia. Are Protons sold in India? Proton is well established in UK as a budget brand and has a profile as the owners of Lotus; they claim Proton cars have Lotus development input for suspension/jandling etc. Never driven one, but they look neat and inoffensive. Regarded as reliable and competent designs, but I haven't seen one on a hire fleet - usually a sign that a brand is regarded as having a degree of image (similar factor for eg Skoda which never appears in UK hire fleets, but eg Kia do appear now). Very much a bread and butter/porridge car.... |

In Germany Skoda nowadays is quite common in hire-fleets. So the Skoda Octavia Combi became a very common car by the Bundeswehr (all leasing-cars). Same here: Link to "www.autoscout24.de" Search "whole Europe", but except the Russian advertise and three from Belgium, it's all cars from Germany. |

Hmm, I must see. Not easy, at around the Ruhr Area there aren't many garrisons. But I guess, they have Mercedes E-Klasse. Nowadays the Bundeswehr doesn't purchase own cars and vans any more, all are leased. Sure, SUV's (Mercedes G "Wolf"), Unimogs and military trucks are own ones. But civil trucks for the use here, not any more, too. So tanks and bulldozers, also other supplies-stuff were sometimes transported by private truck-companies, even leasing-trucks in military use are to see sometimes. |

Proton was indeed sold in Belgium back in the 1990s. It was imported by the local arm of the Inchcape group, who already distributed Daihatsu. Both brands shared the same dealer network. Proton came with the 300/400 series, derived from the 1992-1995 Colt & Lancer. A "600 series", basically a rebadged Mitsubishi Eterna, was shown at the 1994 (or was it 1996 ?) Brussels motor show, but I forgot to take a picture of it. Too bad, because it was never sold here. However, a couple of years later, Inchcape decided to leave continental Europe. A real bombshell. Daihatsu managed to form a local distribution company for Belgium and Luxembourg. Proton didn't, and left the country. -- Last edit: 2011-05-11 00:42:22 |
