Jaqob P. ◊ 2006-01-12 16:51	For the scene where it actually goes down the cliff, it was replaced by a Lancia Appia cab. because the director was'nt satisfied by the crash. You can see it because the Lancia has a bonnet/hood that goes open on the windscreen side, wheter the Aston has it's hinges on the front side. -- Last edit: 2006-01-12 16:52:51

Upon looking closely at the still, it seems they modified the nose of the Lancia a bit as well as added in the bullet mirrors & side air vents, etc. It's quite well done as you can only tell when seeing the still image. -- Last edit: 2006-10-09 05:11:35
Flaminiasupersport ◊ 2006-12-12 14:28	Anyway, using an Appia Vignale is just as criminal as using an Aston... I love that movie but the way the cars are smashed (Lambo, Jaguars ...) is always a nightmare!
lastinpurple ◊ 2006-12-30 19:48	Don't worry. The Lambo was already crushed and the Jaguars were terrible conservated (you can se some oxide on the front of the red Jaguar)

gliffhanger ◊ 2007-01-29 13:04	Aston Martin In The Italian Job (1969 & 2002) The Italian Job (1969) features a silver DB4 Convertible, owned by crook Charlie Croker, played by Michael Caine. This car is destroyed in a Mafia ambush, along with a pair of E-type Jaguars. The cars were meant to serve as getaway vehicles in the subsequent robbery "in case anything goes wrong." The gang decide to proceed despite this loss, and the question of what happens if anything goes wrong is pointedly ignored by Croker. Although it is commonly believed that this car was destroyed during filming, it still exists and currently belongs to an AMOC member. Rather than destroy an expensive Aston, a Lancia mocked up to look like its British counterpart was pushed over the edge for the final take. In the 2003 remake with the same title, the character Handsome Rob, played by Jason Statham, ends up driving an Aston Martin, but a DB7 Volante, not the Vanquish that he wanted. In the 2002 film "The Italian Job" features a Vanquish, owned by the crook.

Originally a rough DB4 was scheduled to go over the cliff, but it caught fire whilst on storage and was too badly damaged to be used, hence the hasty 'conversion' of the Lancia. 163ELT appeared on television during 1973/74(?) in an episode of the Benny Hill show, with Benny playing his loveable, lecherous self, accompanied by the wonderful Patrica Hayes playing a somewhat elderly prostitute.

The scene used in the film was "Ad Libbed" and that is why the lighting is so poor, as they could not work out where to put the camera or the lighting..............

The interesting point from the discussion above which I have not seen anywhere else is that two cars were trashed - a genuine silver DB4 (though not 163 ELT) AND the Lancia-based lookalike - other sources only suggest one car was pushed over.
Davidson ◊ 2012-02-07 17:33	The Italian Job website has some fascinating information on the cars involved, much of which has been recorded here on various threads. The piece on the DB4 confirms the view that a 'doctored' Lancia Flaminia Cabriolet was used to replicate the DB4 for its 'second' drop off the hillside. http://www.theitalianjob.com/cars_fastcars.htm The Flaminia does appear to have proportions more comparable to the DB4 than an Appia.

Both a DB4 and its body double were wrecked. The scene was shot two times. Empirical evidence: The Flaminia that goes down the cliff is clearly LHD, and it sports the telltale rolled wheel well openings. The car that gets mauled by the Caterpillar is a DB4: it's RHD and has flat wheel openings.
