Utilizes the XWD all-wheel drive system featuring a one-speed single range transfer unit with variable front-to-rear torque split by way of the clever electronic center coupling. The transfer unit resides toward the rear of the vehicle, fore of the rear differential. There is a longitudinal prop shaft that runs the length between the front transaxle connecting to the transfer unit which subsequently connects to the rear differential. This setup (typical of front-drive based all-wheel drive systems) eliminates the conventional transfer case. 4-wheel electronic traction control and electronic limited-slip rear differential (eLSD) are standard for side-to-side torque control. Although it lacks low range reduction gearing due to its design, it’s still very effective in off road conditions that don’t require low range gearing. The 9-3X sets about 1.4 inches higher off the ground than standard 9-3 wagons. |

So, essentially, it is to the 9-3 what the Outback is (or, was, in some countries) to the Legacy? |

Yes it is like the Outback or indeed the Audi Allroad range. But unlike those two not all 9-3X are AWD. The 1.9 Diesel is only available as front wheel drive. |
