That is a M4 Sherman with welded hull and turret turned to the rear. It looks like the one with 75mm cannon. Damn hard to find a photo made from the rear. http://www.monte-cassino-1944.com/custom/NARA_SC-212639.jpg -- Last edit: 2011-08-22 20:38:13 |

The gun looks too long to be the M3 L/37 75mm. Looks more like a 76, like the M1A1. Other than that, it looks like an M4 model. |

It is most probably M4A3 (full width opening, with two hatches on a roof hull plate). I'd say, this is late hull, so the manufacturer would be Fisher (in case this is early hull, it would be Ford, but it's less likely). Some older tanks were retrofitted with longer 76mm guns post-war. |

The right column of dailymail.co.uk it's always a mixture of amazement and embarrassment for me. |

In Britain we are fiercely proud that we have a free press, but the quality of what it produces and the way it bulldozes particular social and political ideologies (usually right-wing) is appalling. We certainly don't have a neutral or objective press, apart from some of the small selling "intellectual" papers - basically the Guardian and not much else. But the big paradox is that the worst offenders (Sun, Daily Mail etc) are the biggest sellers - we keep buying this crap in our millions. Given what was published during the Brexit campaign on both sides of the argument, I'm not surprised the EU thinks we're a nation of mad nutters. |
◊ 2016-12-08 15:34 |
Much (much!) to be said about your late statement, dsl (especially, I rolled my eyes while reading The Guardian being 'neutral/objective'). But I assure you that 'EU' (whatever this can be) don't see 'you' (so, you're British, then, dsl?) as mad nutters. For instance, I see all of you British as pleasant nutters. (Well, I'm not exactly 'EU' but didn't I say 'whatever this can be'? So, for the sake of the answer, I count me in. Expecting to count me out as soon as possible.) … Besides, this (the main pic) is what is bound to happen when accepting 'music videos'. -- Last edit: 2016-12-08 15:36:11 |

If The Guardian is objective and neutral, I just wonder what could be the "not much else". Anyway, I was near to say that "I feel a similar situation for us", but probably just for printing and not even buying tons of worthless newspaper copies. |

You must allow for the fact that dsl lives in Scotland, home of the Beano. |

Doesn't quite have the factual content of the Daily Mail, but far less poisonous or prejudiced. |
◊ 2016-12-08 19:17 |
It's the best we've got - maybe not totally neutral, but pretty well the only paper which explains its stances in a way which allows you to agree/disagree according to the issue. The Independent used to be good, but gradually became a semi-skimmed Daily Telegraph in its last year or two as it moved to the right. And then folded. Its legacy is the lightweight "i" - same stances but frothy and much more superficial short throwaway articles. You get lots of puzzles and crosswords instead. |

I'll stick with the Beano, the Automobile, and Classic Bus. |

Well, I guess then, when I was reading their articles I've been very unlucky because I never found this objectiveness. Something I've never found on any other British publication, so perhaps it's just me. Also I guess that newspapers readership is dwindling even more in UK, not a surprise for me to see a newspaper miserably folding, here too they're struggling a lot to survive. Probably we're more lucky for the crosswords. https://www.lasettimanaenigmistica.com/edicola.html?m=site#laSettimanaEnigmistica Slightly more costly than a newspaper, but still much more insightful. |

The Guardian suffers from an overabundance of feminist columnists... anti-Brexit, pro-abortion. Barbara Kingsolver "End this misogynistic horror show. Put Hillary Clinton in the White House" Sarah Churchwell "Hillary Clinton didn’t fail us. We failed her" Jessica Valenti "How do I tell my daughter that America elected a racist, sexist bully?" which drown out the better op-eds... "Democrats once represented the working class. Not any more" |

I no longer have a subscription to the Times, which was my newspaper of choice. Every British daily newspaper provides its own justification for not reading such rags, if you dislike vested interests, stay away from these papers. As a choice forced upon me by the need for information about the situation of the world I am able only to put forward BBC Radio Four, and in particular the Today programme. |

This classic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGscoaUWW2M is still valid, already it's 30 years old. During the Brexit-excitements I've read the online-issues of the papers, mentioned there - and it fits. Maybe it's the same situation there, as we know from the German magazines and newspapers: the online-version is always much worse than the prints. Caused by the fact, that the experienced and better educated writers are working for the print-issued and the online-services are cobbled of low-paid youngsters with low general knowledge skills. A typical example is www.spiegel.de The print-issue has -rather had- a good reputation, but the online-issue nearly never can hold pace. Actually there are internal disputes between the well-named paperwriters and the low-paid online-makers. But it's correct to treat the online-makers worse, as their work is indeed very erroneous and often even a pain in the ass. Why do you know that - do you read that?? -- Last edit: 2016-12-17 13:56:25 |

Do you only read media you agree with? You have to compensate a Katie Hopkins with a Hadley Freeman. Russia Today with BBC World. (No CNN, it's become unbearable) If you understand some Dutch, this is a great analysis of the main broadcasters in Belgium reporting on the riots in Molenbeek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I-tekOp3xM the casual tone of the left-leaning VRT, no violence seen... compared with the commercial channel VTM and international channels. |
◊ 2016-12-22 16:37 |
No, I read different medias - but nowhere anything about feministic things. And nearly never RT Deutsch. If there are actual incidents -as three days ago in Berlin-, I recommend BBC, as they still have a high standard, not all German medias can keep pace with. Thanks for the tipp about the Molenbeek-circumstances. I can read Dutch a bit, so it should be possible - otherwise we have in Germany some similar areas with similar problems. You can read also about that topics - but often "tinted" in specific political and ideological colours. |

I've no reception of BBC radio on the Long Wave band, on the car radio or in the house. That must have become a very weak signal. Droitwich was always marked on old radios. It's not WW-II anymore but it still would be nice to have that option. |
◊ 2016-12-24 10:55 |
It's almost Christmas and I suggest you to buy a new radio set, because if I can receive Radio 4 in Italy on nighttime (although it's probably more than a year or two that I don't even try anymore, there's almost nothing to listen anymore for me on radio), you should receive it like if you were in London. Thank you for the video link, very informative, I'll use it when some idiot will say "Italian press is not free!". |

"The Radio 4 LW signal from Droitwich covers most of England and Wales. There are supplementary long-wave transmitters in Scotland (Burghead and Westerglen, both 50 kW), with medium-wave transmitters in various parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The station can also be heard clearly in most of the Republic Of Ireland, particularly along eastern and southern counties. Reception is also possible in Western Europe, including Italy. However, since March 2014 the BBC is doing works in the transmitter that result in a very weak signal reception in Europe. As of March 2015, the reception of BBC Radio 4 LW 198 kHz is still very poor and difficult, even in the countries next to the UK in continental Europe. In July 2016, 198 kHz can be received clearly in the centre of Germany." Thanks to Wikipedia for the above http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/pye_t20t_2.html Suggestion for new wireless set capable of receiving BBC R4. -- Last edit: 2016-12-24 11:42:53 |

On LW 198 @ElSaxo? Never. Of course I can get it other ways, digital, but not on the Saab Clarion stereo which must stay vintage 1998. |

Yes, but evidently I was remembering bad, and this was before 2014... Still I remember one night being so bored that I've tried to tune my old radio to longwave and finding some French stations, one Romanian, Deutschlandfunk I think and the BBC. Anyway, given that you like the old and garbled analogue sound, you should try this remotely controlled receiver: http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ |

It's all to do with the condition of the ionosphere, sometimes my crystal set would pick up Radio Luxembourg on 208m medium wave, sometimes it wouldn't. http://www.vintagewirelessradio.com/?page_id=118 -- Last edit: 2016-12-26 19:15:07 |

I did add it to my online stations. I'm now much more informed about the shipping forecast. But the reason is not atmospheric, these services are quietly being phased out. |
◊ 2016-12-29 07:30 |
I'm listening to the Today programme as I type this, on 198 kilohertz as I'm using a miniature radio and earpiece to avoid the wrath of Rosemaryfromstaffs. There is no sign of this being phased out, there would be uproar from cricket lovers and sailors, although the god of money saving could kick in at any time. http://www.ciao.co.uk/Roberts_Sportsman_R894__Review_5274664 -- Last edit: 2016-12-29 11:57:10 |
