Question: Is the tC a direct rebadge of any Toyota? If not, is the tC (or some rebadged variant) sold outside of North America at all? |

i don't think its a rebadged Toyota (according to wikipedia ) but since 2011 it is sold as the Toyota Zelas in Middle East, China and both Central and South Americas ( still from wikipedia ) and its not sold in Japan or any RHD market ( wiki again ) Link to "www.toyota.ae" |

In that case, should they really be listed with Japanese origin? ![]() ![]() |

The simple answer is probably that we don't know for sure so its useless to bump the comment every day, it's probably best to ask this type of thing in this thread on the forum as comments will end up getting missed as there are so many comments each day. Origin on IMCDB is determined by which 'office' initiated a program and where design and engineering took place rather than what market it was designed for (though usually if something is intended for a market the program is usually initiated and conducted by them). There are other oddities with origin here with lots of primarily EU market Japanese and Korean cars being listed as origin Japan or Korea even though a lot (most?) of the development was conducted in Europe. |

according to wikipedia, Scion's headquarters are in California but i really don't know what to think about the tC, looks like its the only one that wasn't based on a Toyota ( it took the opposite road, Toyota based the Zelas on it ) |

Actually, the first generation tC was based on the second generation Avensis platform. The current tC continues that relation, being based on the third generation Avensis. |

What does the platform have to do with the model origin though? |

well, the way i meant to say was : not a copy of a current Toyota car . For sure it will use Toyota pieces but unlike the others Scion , it is not a rebadged Toyota -- Last edit: 2015-07-27 21:02:53 |

Because the T platform that the tC shared with the Avensis (a UK built model) was also shared with various other Toyota models, including the Japanese built Allion. Plus, the tC is built exclusively in Japan. So, even though it's only sold in North America as the tC, it's still of Japanese origin. Kinda like a reverse Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was sold globally, but only built in the US, hence why it's or US origin. |

Note that you are talking about the "built in" location now, not the model origin. Are we still talking about the general design or the platform it's based on? |

Alright, to put it simple: It's a US-exclusive model, as the tC wasn't sold anywhere else, including Canada, until the second generation. But, it wasn't built in the US, instead it was built in Japan, on a global platform. That work for you? |
