This one is a Roadmaster 70. In the thumbs can be seen the extra length of the hood from the rear end of the hood moulding to the rear edge of the hood sen only in the big engine models. As there was no Century convertible coupe this must be a Roadmaster 76-C - one of 1845 built. |

The Roadmaster convertible has a full-length hood from grill to windshield: Link to "www.flickr.com" http://www.flickriver.com/photos/jay_el/42593817/ Yes there are; 542 built. Which does have the extra length of hood you pointed out: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" http://www.autogallery.org.ru/bui1940.htm Link to "m.iphotoscrap.com" http://www.flickr.com/photos/bboyles/5034017404/in/photostream /vehicle_370332-Buick-Century-66-C-1940.html Link to "cartoys.net" Unfortunately so does the Special: Link to "www.oldcarbrochures.com" http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/carsforsale/buick/special/868589.html http://www.remarkablecars.com/main/buick/1940-buick-011.html Link to "www.flickr.com" |

I should have checked 70 Years of Buick instead of relying on The Standard Catalog. Yes there was a Century convertible and this might be one. On the Special and Super the moulding on the hood side went right back to the line where the hood joins the cowl whereas on the bigger engine models there is a space of about four inches which can't be seen on cars with side mounted spares. All of the 1940 Buicks have the hood going back almost to the windshield. Looking at it again the Roadmaster of course uses a different - the bigger C body shared with Cadillac - body to Century and you are right it has the moulding mounted differently. -- Last edit: 2011-10-07 22:09:01 |

At least in the crash scene in the movie, the name plate looks like CENTURY. ![]() ![]() -- Last edit: 2021-11-25 20:42:41 |
