I just saw the movie and when you see the back of this car in the chop shop up close it says on the back Volvo 244 GL. |

Anyone else think the hubcaps do not belong? I thought they didn't get those hubcaps until the mid '80s. |

Could this be locally assembled? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Halifax_Assembly |

Are you sure its really a 244, and not a 264 with the replacement trunk lid from a 244? Because wasn't the chrome grille specific to the 264? And wasn't the DL the only trim offered in North America? |

Nice 8 Track. |

I don't really know the details on the 240 vs. the 260 grille but after owning several 240 I do know that the grille is the easiest thing to swap on the entire car. The grille is only held in position by two plastic lock pins that you remove by hand. The badge however is glued to the sheet metal under the trunk lid (not the trunk lid itself). It would be easier to change the grille than the badge. GL is a higher trim level than the DL and the US always got the highest trim levels and models. |

In the US, the 240-series until 1980 only came in DL or GT (2-door) trims. The 260-series had one year of a DL wagon, and the rest were GL until 1980. Not sure if Canada had different trim levels. -- Last edit: 2012-12-11 22:45:54 |

Ok, thanks for the info. |

Apparently in the USA we also got a trim level of the 244 called the "GLE", from 1980 to 1984 Link to "www.volvobylnb.com" /vehicle_72934-Volvo-244-1980.html Apparently the 244 GLE also had a 264 grille, and 1980 was also the last year for the quad round headlights in the USA, So maybe the one in Detroit Rock City is a 1980-only 244 GLE with the "E" badge in "GLE" missing??? |

No, the GLE from 1980-82 was a 6-cylinder, so it really was a 264 model. In 1980, they dropped the numbers in the badges. I did find out that in 1975 there was a 242GL and 244GL models sold in the US, but it used the dual headlight front end, so I have to ammend my previous comment. |

Judging by that link, a fairly large number of our CDN-based Volvos should be reassessed for local assembly. -- Last edit: 2012-12-12 03:51:33 |

The very most cars in Canadian scenes from all(?) US-brands should be "made in CDN". According my Canadian friend the absolute majority of US-origin cars (and some Asian) are assembled locally. |

I know this is an old thread, but I can clear up some of the unanswered questions, this car was bought brand new by my father in 1978. It was still in the family, sitting unused in my brother's garage when a friend of mine who supplies some cars to a guy whose job it was to find these types of cars for movie companies. In North America, 4 door and wagon 240s all got the high hoods and 4 round headlights in 1978. 2 door models continued with the flat hood and 2 round headlights. To distinguish the 260s, they all received 4 rectangular headlights. This was indeed a 244GL. In Canada, GLs were given the fuel injected engines as well as leather seats, chrome grille, sunroof and overdrive as standard. DLs had the single carb engine. In the US, there were GLs as well, but all had the fuel injection engine. The hubcaps are indeed incorrect, I think they didn't start until the 1990 models. The mirrors are also incorrect, they were from a 1981 model. Note the missing chrome trim around the rear quarter windows, I was too lazy to reinstall after a paint job. There was a second car, a cherry red 1977 244 DL that was modified to look like this car. It had no sunroof, so a new roof was welded on! P.S. I have no idea what happened to either car. |
