Thats what it's meant to be, but i doubt it is because 1. It looks wrong 2. It blows up |

Something about the front reminds me of an OM Taurus, maybe with the bumper raised and a new cab added? |

Opel Blitz 4x2 truck fitted with genuine wartime German economy pattern "ersatz" cab made from wood/board. |

It's not that easy! It is an Opel Blitz 3 to (4x2) built in licence by Daimler-Benz under the name L701 (1943-49). As they were ordered to use the Opel design instead of their own no markings or logos were attached. The Daimler-Benz versions were the only ones to use the simplified cab (Einheitsfahrerhaus). Second detail problem: this is not a simplified cab! The original cab was lower and the roof was bent from side to side. I assume that this was a wreck and the cab had rotted away long ago. This cab was probably made by the film carpenters. Perhaps Harrison Ford made it himself! -- Last edit: 2006-08-03 01:16:30 |

because of where this sequence was filmed it is possible that it is a genuine wartime German truck..lots were impressed by the local population..this one could have been tarted up for its final end..dont forget..they actually blow up a pre War RAF pattern Crossley petrol tanker in the same film..and the Crossley is a lot rarer than the Blitz!! |

this truck stunt actually went wrong..as the vehicle goes up the ramp,a telegraph pole is ejected at high speed via a compressed air cannon mounted under the vehicle..as it goes up the ramp, the cannon was meant to somersault the truck onto its roof (a la A Team type stunt)..but the old truck was too heavy.which resulted in it coasting along on its left tyres then falling on its left side..guess they didnt have a similar truck to repeat the stunt with,so went with what they had. |

Re Ersatz patt cab..."In 1944 shortage of steel forced the introduction of a new simple utility cab made of pressed cardboard over a timber framework..it was dimensioned and so designed so that it would fit ALL weight classes of the Schell-Programm chassis" taken from Wheeled Vehicles Of The Wehrmacht,pub.1974..S-P vehicles are Ford,Steyr,Mercedes,Opel,Phanomen..so it would apear the cab was a universal pattern which could be fixed to any of the stated vehicles. |
