These are actually six cars, all made for the film. Designed by Rowland Emmett they were built at the Alan Mann racing workshop in 1967. Read here more about it: http://www.chittygen11.com/wherenow.htm http://www.chittygen11.com/about_chitty.htm http://members.aol.com/cotsmm/cotspg3.html The original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were two racecars raced by Count Louis Zborowski in 1921. http://www.hartlana.co.uk/bphoto/c108.htm -- Last edit: 2006-08-05 01:59:43 |

Beautiful cars, very impressive in person. I saw the one in the Keswick museum. Well worth visiting if you like film cars. |

The Keswick museum one features non opening rear doors i believe..they were sealed shut when the vehicle was sold off after filming. |

Chitty wasn't a Mercedes. It was a made for the movie car using a 1968 Ford engine and automatic transmission. |

Created for movie ? We have a term for that, just to make the car name about as long as the movie. |

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a beautiful (and majestic) car. |
◊ 2018-05-30 08:02 |
The car was designed by Ken Adam, not Rowland Emmett. |

But only a hollow imitation of the real thing..... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chitty_Bang_Bang It’s a great pity that if you google Chitty Bang Bang all you get is advertising spawned by the merchandising consequent upon some crappy kids’ film. Your starter for ten. -- Last edit: 2018-06-27 16:59:10 |

In the original script, Chitty was supposed to bite at the zeppelin. The Chitty that they were going to use in that scene had a pop-up left front fender which was supposed to represent a mouth, which to me doesn't sound right because the mouth should come out from somewhere around the grille, not on the fender. Unfortunately, this idea was dropped from the script, but that addition in the fender still remains on that very car. |
