Though difficult to see, it's a 1955 Slough-built 2CV (hood ornament, painted bumper with chrome, typical headlights). There's a strange story about this particular car (cf "Bangkok beauty" in the magazine Popular Classics, January 1993): In 1955 someone wanted to import british 2CVs in Thailand. The first two cars came, but the dealer didn't have enough money to pay import-taxes. The cars were locked away in a Government warehouse for 30 years! Every week a Thai came to turn the engines over and once in a while, the cars drove around a little bit. Then somebody heard about these cars at the US Embassy, and he was allowed to buy one of these 2CVs, which he took to the States, and later to the UK. The other car was sold to a Chinese, who offered it for a role in this film.... (Btw. in the article the filmed car is said to be grey, but it is obviously the same maroon colour as the other one pictured in Popular Classics) |

I got an e-mail from the guy who has found this car in Bangkok: it's a 1953 model, not a 1955, as was said in 'Popular Classics'... Great! |
