Vauxhall Series PA Cresta or Velox. Models introduced in October 1957, facelifted in August 1959. This is the pre-facelift type with the split back windscreen. Unless you can read the badging, the two models are very difficult to tell apart, the main difference being the level of trim, Velox = poverty, Cresta = luxury. The registration number was issued by the County Council of Bedford between November 1957 and March 1958, so it's an early example. The car to the right is a Standard Ten, and across the road is a Ford Consul Mk 1. -- Last edit: 2012-01-10 21:45:37 |

John's remarks are most interesting. I notice the earlier Series E Velox was well adorned with chrome brightwork - which reminded me of a guest's car, I think in 1956, when we stayed at Northdown Hall Hotel, Cliftonville. He was quite proud of his black saloon, ROV 808, and told me it was a Velox 'with Cresta fittings'. Whilst he was possibly playing on my impressionable 8-year old mind, it may be at least some of the Cresta goodies were available on the cheaper model as optional extras. Wish I were then knowledgeable enough to check his car's interior trim. |
