This 4x4 system was improved over the older shift-on-the-move four-wheel drive system in the 1981-1987 model rounded-line pickups and utilities. InstaTrac four-wheel drive was fitted as standard across the board on all K-Series pickups and SUVs. Both four-wheel drive systems used Two High, Four High, Neutral, and Four Low drive modes. Shift-on-the-move four-wheel drive could be shifted from two-wheel drive to fully locked four-wheel drive at speeds up to 25 mph (40 kph). InstaTrac four-wheel drive could be shifted from two-wheel drive to fully locked four-wheel drive at all speeds.
