Neptune ◊ 2012-05-17 22:19	The 1988 model year was the last model year the Range Rover used Land-Rover’s own permanent four-wheel drive system with the Land-Rover LT230T transfer case. For the 1989 model year, Range Rover’s 4x4 system underwent a major change. All Range Rovers now used a permanent four-wheel drive system supplied by BorgWarner and featured a two-speed dual range BorgWarner 13-61-004 transfer case with automatic center differential lock. The automatic differential lock was realized by adding a "viscous coupling unit" (VCU) to the center differential. The automatic viscous lock was progressive, increasing the lock-up percentage based on the severity of traction loss at either the front or rear drive wheels. Under normal driving the special viscous fluid remained in a liquid-like state, allowing the center differential to permit the front/rear propeller shafts to operate independently of each other. When either the front or rear drive wheels lost traction, the friction produced by the front/rear propeller shafts turning at excessively different speeds would heat-up the viscous fluid, causing it to change from a liquid state to a solid state. Thus locking the center differential which in-turn locked the front/rear propeller shafts together. The new BorgWarner transfer case was said to be smoother and quieter than the older Land-Rover transfer case, however, it removed control of the four-wheel drive system from the driver. By doing this, the driver didn’t have to worry about when he or she should lock the center differential, as it would now lock itself when needed. This also prevented clueless drivers from having the center differential locked on high-traction surfaces such as paved roadways (which would damage the 4x4 system). All well and good, except now experienced off road drivers could not lock or unlock the 4x4 system when conditions merited.
