Mid-60s Daihatsu Compagno - fuller view in /vehicle_516092-Ford-Cortina-1971.html . These were the first J cars imported into UK (Sept 64) but only as 2 door and estate - I don't think I've ever seen a 4 door before. |

looks like italian even Pininfarina design! |

Can't trace any reference to Italian styling input although agree the Pininfarina resemblance - there were some Italian styled mid-60s J saloons (eg Michelotti did some Hinos, Bertone the Mazda 1500 Luce) - but this might just have been a neat copy of European themes. there was a very pretty Spider as well - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1965_Daihatsu_Compagno-Spider_01.jpg . |

Actually it appears to be a Vignale design: http://www.vignale.org/daihatsu_vignale.html |

surely, Vignale is most adorable + elegant on small cars, cause perfect proportions even the name is an italien allusion of companion in german Kompanion "Gefährte" but "Gefährt" also means vehicle -- Last edit: 2012-07-13 14:07:49 |

Grille/sidelights suggest probably the 1971 facelift as Daihatsu 1000 - /vehicle_292866-Daihatsu-1000-1971.html (our only other example). Useful Vignale connection ^ - does explain how such a dinky design emerged out of nowhere as Daihatsu's first real car effort. |

basically it is a 1960 trapez design most commen on Peugeot 404 + Fiat 1500 indeed it looks like styled by Giovanni Michelotti who started his career at Vignale thank you dsl + DynaMike! -- Last edit: 2012-07-13 15:05:21 |

The original Compagno 800 (http://dayerses.com/photos/daihatsu-compagno-berlina/02/) was the first Japanese car imported into the UK; one with a B-plate resided in the town where I used to live. This will be the 1970 Compagno 1000. |
