Late 1992+ facelift version by the location of the number plate. The naming for these is... complicated. We use MPi a lot, but from what I can find it didn't come in until the Persona and Compact were introduced in late 1993. Prior to that they were just badged by their engine, wondering if it would be useful to list the older ones as "Saloon" and "Aeroback" rather than the engine as currently to make it easier (as we can't always have a plate to check)? ![]() ![]() |

Glass's does not use MPi name at all, but confirms Oct 92 facelift with Multi Point injection (and catalytic converter, revised styling, interior tweaks). It lists them as 1.3 and 1.5 Saloon and Aeroback with GE, GL, GLS (=SL after Jan 94) and top-of-tree SE, all running before and after the facelift. Plus more limited editions than you can throw a stick at - there were at least 11 on the 1.5 GL alone. |

They quietly added MPi to the brochures and badging subsequently by the looks of it, here's a 1994 brochure and shots of the rear of a later car (badged 1,5 SL MPi) and a 1993 car (badged 1.5 GLS Triple Valve with MPi on the other side):![]() (UK Spec Proton on Facebook) https://www.flickr.com/photos/7430965@N05/6448830551 https://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_gav/46503235522 The way I look at this: a) We can keep the current naming system, 1989-92 as 1.3/1.5, 1993+ as MPi. It's fairly easy to separate the two year ranges, but not really easy to tell a 1.3 or 1.5 without a visible genuine plate. b) We follow the strictly accurate approach, 1989-93 as 1.3/1.5, 1994+ as MPi. But we can't tell a 1993 from a 1994+ without the plate or a (close) look at the badges. c) Make things simple and use the brochure naming which focuses on the bodystyle and use "Saloon" and "Aeroback" as models and put engine and trim in extra info. This would alleviate the whole confusion of them having to be defaulted as 1.3 or 1.5 if we don't have a plate and could work either across the board or combined with approach a or approach b for 1993/94 models. Also, can anyone confirm if the C20 (or C21A/C22A) codes referenced on English Wikipedia are accurate and applicable to these? However, they're named it would be useful to have a code to collect them under (there's also a large collection of domestic market Sagas that this would apply to). |

Glass's does not give codes for initial March 89 range launch, but starts in Jan 91 when both 1.3 and 1.5 got engine upgrades with 12v and small facelift. So 1.3 became C21ASN (saloon), C21ALN (Aerodeck) and 1.5 C22ASN (saloon), C22ALN (Aerodeck). No further codes mentioned during remaining period here (including the Oct 92 MPi arrival). |
