Now does that badge say 300SL or 500SL? Taco?

None of both, as it has the 1973-only (for USA) bumper.

Looking at this scene again and freeze-framing it, I would say it's 300SL:

How about 350SL, which would match the 73 or earlier bumpers??

In the thumb I posted, that looks more like a double 0 than a "50". Anybody else have an opinion?

If it was a 1973 car, it wouldn't have this type of headrests. Also the 1972 and 1973 US bumpers had vertical overriders, so this must be an European-spec 300 SL that reached the States. I guess the 300 SL first model was 1985.

I agree.

Hasn't the late R107 a thicker rubber on the bumper? http://pics.imcdb.org/0is297/vlcsnap7044574fg9.2971.jpg

Actually, I agree as well for the visual observation. All 500SL can be excluded as they had black boot spoiler. Agree with ingo that if US spec this is 71-73, which is only possible for 350SL and 450 SL. rpcm's explanation for a 1985+ EU spec 300SL which somehow crept in under the radar seems the best option through the contradictions.
