Looks like what was sold in the uk as the Hillman Avenger and in the USA as the Chrysler Cricket, probably a SIMCA in Europe. |

In Belgium it was sold as Sunbeam Avenger. Maybe in Italy too. |

IIRC in France it was sold as Sunbeam 1250/1300/1500/1600, and probably in Italy too. I'm not sure what this is exactly; I owned two, but both poverty-spec. |

This is a 70-73 car from tall grille badge = 1250 or 1500. Looks equivalent of UK GL spec (so likely to be 1500 instead of 1250) with optional vinyl and sports wheels and a 72+ colour; 1972+ GLS also a possibility but I think it had chrome side trim and a C-pillar badge. Red grille badge = Sunbeam (instead of Hillman blue). So I go for 1972 Sunbeam Avenger GL 1500, unless local name was different. |

1250 TC or 1500 TC. The latter was ultrarare, so likely a 1250 TC. The name of the trim changed for the Italian market. It was available since late 1972, so a '73. |

Nice extra pics. Fairly sure this is 1500 GLS equivalent so 1500 TC as minimum, maybe a different local name for being range-topper?? |

No: We had a 1250 standard (4 doors only) with rectangular headlights, a similar 1250 wagon, and with quad headlights, a 1250 TC and a 1500 TC. Later for '75 we had 1300s and 1600s with same nomenclatures. The trim GLS was available for the facelifted 1977+ version. |

Wow - that's more Avengers than my dad had. UK never had quad lights 1250/1300, so EU export only permutation. |

Anyway the car was quite unlucky by us, even though the car magazines acclaimed it as a new car stricktly linked to UK joining the European Common Market (The EEC, now UE). I have to say that strangely, with UK in the EEC, lesser british cars were available in Italy. The Mini Clubman saloon was no more imported since alte '72, and the same for the very few Marinas already imported, and the Austin 1300 GT and the Morris 1300 Traveller. Not a single UK Ford would come here after 1970. About Vauxhall, FE Victors/Ventoras/VX490 were never imported and the Viva, coldly wellcome for '71 and '72, saw its sells sink. Since 1976 the Chevette was not better. In 1972 was sold the very last Imp im Italy, and the same faith affected the Sunbeam Sceptre. Even MG as a make stopped its imports to Italy forever with the exceptions of MG badged Metros, Maestros and Montegos of the 80s. Strange for me as UK was in the EEC. Mini Clubman estate and Jaguar were the exceptions. Allegros came in late 1976 more than a year after the demise of its partial clone, the Innocenti Regent, and didn't sell well. Same story for the Princess. Just a bit better went the Rover SD1. |
