Aus-built Leyland Marina - nice capture. |

Code for Aus Marinas is YDO24 as they had ex-Maxi 1500 and 1750 E-series engines, or YDO25 for the 2.6 6cyl version. Built in Aus 72-75, then all tooling shipped to ZA 75 until at least 78. Aus Marinas had this grille 72-74, then facelifted with new all black format (which was not used in UK). |

Update - Morris used 72-73, Leyland 73-75. As far as I know grille stayed unchanged, so defaulting to Morris. And this is now our 2nd Aus Marina in HK, so seems they were sold there (alongside Aus-build Mini Clubman/1275 GT). |

Is there a way to recognise an HK-spec, AUS-built Marina from the back ? I see two potential candidates... /vehicle_623090-Morris-Marina-ADO28-1971.html /vehicle_1056332-Morris-Marina-ADO28-1971.html The second one being rather similar to this YDO24: /vehicle_869106-Morris-Marina-YDO24-1973.html |

I don't know and can't find references or definite pictures to check out the detail. The timeline is: - April 71 UK Marina launch - rear had Morris script badge on left of boot, and Marina on right with logo for engine size (1.3, 1.8 or TC) - April 72 Aus Marina launch with adapted E-series engine - rear had Morris script badge on left of boot, and Marina on right with logo for engine size (1.5, 1.75 (or whatever numbers were used) or TC, although I don't know what the badges actually said). 2.6 Marina arrived later at end of 73. - 72-73 British Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia rebranded all its ex-BMC product as Leyland, abandoning previous use of Morris. Most sources describe this as a complete switch across all ranges in (early?) 73, but my Mini bible says it happened in April 72 for all Minis, so the picture is muddy. However Australian Morris Marina brochures from 1972 seem to exist, and I've got book references to 72-73 as Morris. So it seems for a year or so, Aus made Morris-badged Marinas. If my googled selection of pictures is precisely accurate, the only early visible external difference from UK seems to be hubcaps - Aus never used UK style. Aus may have used different door mirrors - bigger and squarer, black plastic instead of UK chrome. And there's a comment on ARonline that they only started tinkering with the grilles when the Leyland rebranding came in, so Aus Morris fronts should be identical to UK. Noted also that Aus Marinas don't seem to have reversing lights, unlike most early UK examples but I think they were options rather than standard on the basic UK trims, so not diagnostic. And fitting them on HK cars (wherever made) would depend on local regs. And that's where I run out of juice. Of the 2 suggested for change to possible Aus build, the first seems very UK to me for a sludgy colour unlike the brighter colour choices available in Aus, while the second (red) one is a stronger colour and could fit either origin; maybe the engine badge looks darker than the shiny UK button logo, so is Aus style?? Therefore I've no problem if it switches to Aus build, but am not voting one way or t'other. -- Last edit: 2021-12-28 18:03:40 |

PS - if the ARonline comment about grille changes is solid (taken from here under bullet for 1973), this one becomes 73+ Leyland. |
