Looks like a J registration. If so it's a 1300 as the 1100 was discontinued in 1968. |

White plate too (though I guess this could be a replacement). |

"Number plates – In 1973 the appearance of registration plates was changed for the first time since 1903. From 1 January, vehicles were required to have reflective number plates – black on white at the front and black on yellow at the back. Reflective plates were introduced so that unlit vehicles could be seen more easily at night. The regulations also provided for the size, shape and character of registration marks." DVLA - A brief history of registration Therefore a replacement on a 1970 car. Only new vehicles were required to have reflective plates, I certainly never changed the silver on black plates on my cars, the Bentley still has them. -- Last edit: 2012-11-09 10:11:30 |

Reflective plates were allowed for a few years in parallel with white/grey on black before being standardised in 73 as above. I think 69/70 was first availability, but can't find a precise date. Reflective plates were something we adopted from the French, who had started using them mid-60s. |

I'd have said earlier than 1969/70. I fitted reflective plates to my 1966my VW in 1967/8 after having avoided rearending a French-registered Citroën Ami 6 (IIRC) on a country road in Austria in the dark because it had them. |
