There's actually no such thing as a '73 Dodge Challenger R/T. The "Rallye" package took the place of the R/T in 1972, however this car clearly isn't a Rallye, either, since it lacks the vents behind the front wheels. This car indeed appears to be a '73, but a base Challenger of that year made up to the look vaguely like a 1970 R/T. The "bumblebee" tail stripe was only available in '70, the R/T logos appear to be added, the wrecked car at auction they bought appears to have a '70-'72 front bumper ('73s and '74s had bumper guards, as on the "repaired" car), and the grille surround, while definitely from a '72-'74, has been painted in black to resemble a 1970 R/T grille at first glance. A dual-scooped hood has also been added, which was standard for R/Ts and Rallyes of all years. |

I am glad I wasn't the only one to notice the stripe and the emblems. But check out the wrecked car in the pictures...it has 70-71 side marker lights, but the 72-74 grille and taillights. The motor they remove from that car in the movie is definetely a big-block, probably a 383, and big-blocks were only available in 70-71. So either someone took the time to put a 383 in a 72-74 Challenger and paint it to look like an R/T, or they put a 72-74 grille and taillight panel on a 70 or 71... |
◊ 2006-10-22 07:40 |
Big blocks were available in all 4 years of the Challenger, but they had to be ordered in '73 and '74. The '70 through '72 came standard with a 383 Magnum and the '73 and '74 came standard with 318's. |

If you look closely when they're filling out the car's paperwork, he writes down that the engine is a "383," and I believe the gear ratio is listed as "4.11." I didn't see the year listed anywhere on there, though. |
◊ 2007-01-15 20:58 |
4:11?, thats an awful lot of gear for a street car! even with a 4 speed. |
◊ 2007-01-15 21:30 |
I lot of the muscle cars had them, though. Lots of delinquents liked to practice street launches with them. ![]() I just got a still of the car's VIN plate from pausing the DVD...I'm going to see if I can decode it to solve this riddle once and for all...at least on one of the cars. |

The wrecked car (000 GAL) has a VIN of JS23UOE114291, which according to the Mopar VIN decoder makes it a 1970 Challenger R/T with a 440 4 barrel, built at the Los Angeles plant. It's the 14,291st Challenger ever built. The stolen "changeover" car has a VIN of JH23LOE142781, which makes it another 1970 Challenger from the Los Angeles plant, but a non-R/T 2 barrel 383 V8. It's Challenger number 42,781 Therefore, they're apparently both 1970 Challengers with various '72-'74 options added, for whatever reason. -- Last edit: 2007-01-15 21:41:10 |

◊ 2007-02-11 21:11 |
It has the grill of the '72-'74 Challenger I always thought it was a '73 and the 383 had been dropped in (not from the factory) and the bumblebee stripe was also aftermarket |
◊ 2007-05-02 06:52 |
Doesn't it have "72 Dodge" written on the hood? The only thing that makes it look like a 70/71 is the side markers and the fact that it's a 383. Engine swaps are pretty common and they could have made up the vin. Why bother to swap a '72/'73 front clip and change the tail panel and tail lights (a fair bit of work) if they were trying to make it look like a '70? I think they put '70 side markers on a '72...even though I know the recess in the quarter is different. -- Last edit: 2007-05-02 06:52:30 |
◊ 2007-06-24 04:22 |
this dodge is obviously a 1973, because in the movie they mention it more then once, also they R/T is fake,as they dropped it after 1971, and replaced it with the rallye packadge, i think it's a 383 challenger. -- Last edit: 2007-06-24 04:22:52 |
◊ 2007-06-24 22:58 |
They may say that it is a 1973 in the movie to make it newer, but having used an older cheaper one. |
◊ 2007-07-04 21:16 |
I got those numbers from freeze-framing the DVD...those numbers were not "made up," they were actually visible on the car's VIN plates during the stripping scene. No one said they were trying to make the car look like a '70...it's a 1970 car that they were trying to make look like a new car (ie, '73 or so). They saved as much money as possible by destroying the oldest cars they could get their hands on, the same way that they used a 1971 Mustang for Eleanor but made it up to look like a '73. Case closed. |
◊ 2008-01-12 04:30 |
Toby would've mix and match the parts for this production. Should the wrecked and the stolen vehicles be a separate page? |
◊ 2008-01-12 17:05 |
They're supposed to be the exact same model, I do not see why listing these separately (and anyway the wrecked one never runs) |
◊ 2008-03-22 04:03 |
No matter how many times I see it, destroying that car breaks my heart. |
◊ 2008-09-03 00:26 |
wow whoever uploaded this is way off this is a 72/74 my best friend had a red 72 dodge challenger that looked alot like this but his was beat up and the vinyl top has been long gone but it still had a one but sides do resemble 70 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I know that both Jill's are actually 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T's with 72 through 74 parts added on. I recommend that you post it as a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T (modified as 1973). Both the wreck and the rebuilt have Double Whitewall tires with spoke hubcaps. Dodge Challengers 72 through 74 had a Ralleye package. -- Last edit: 2009-01-11 20:03:25 |

I love watching this scene, but i hate how they trashed this beauty |
◊ 2010-10-13 01:19 |
The Challenger that is towed from the Prince Chrysler yard to the junkyard is not the same one that is seen in the junkyard itself and thrown into the crusher in the very next scene. When the towing truck leaves the dealer's yard and throughout the chase it's a Challenger with 1971 taillights, in the junkyard and crusher scenes it's a Challenger with 1972-74 taillights (and also with all hubcaps on it again and freshly cleaned). The different taillights are very hard to see in these scenes. Thanks to the VIN-decoding above it's obvious that they used 1970 Challengers which were modified to look as newer models, but I'd like to know why they used two different cars for these scenes. The towed car and the car in the crusher also have different grilles and bumpers, as seen in the 3rd picture of antp's post and the 4th picture of MaindrianPace's post above: http://img276.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0030393hi.jpg http://img523.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1970dodgechallengerrt4mv7.jpg So there are (at least) three different Challengers in the movie, in roles of two different cars (wreck and rebuilt). -- Last edit: 2010-10-13 02:46:06 |
◊ 2011-02-07 23:52 |
The one they crushed probably had suspension issues or something, it'd be hard towing that. |
◊ 2011-02-13 04:54 |
If you watch (the old) VHS version with the org. songs ect. the Challenger looks orange yet in the new version (where these pics came from) it looks red |
◊ 2011-10-04 02:44 |
the pic at far right in the crusher has a 70 grill......the car with the big dent and the one on the tow truck has a later grill. -- Last edit: 2014-05-26 01:39:48 |

000 Gal has a 440, but I think Pace wrote 383 on the work sheet. The changeover had a 383, though. -- Last edit: 2012-04-30 05:21:35 |
◊ 2012-06-11 03:22 |
The car on the tow truck being chased has a '73 grill and it has bumper gaurds. the one in the crusher has a '70 grill and no bumper gaurds. |

I've heard of this scheme, it's known as "Rebirthing". But there is a extra part in the scheme; the rebirth vehicle is re-registered as a new vehicle. When the Russell Street Bombing occurred on the 27th March 1986, one of the bombers was involved in the rebirthing of several stolen vehicles and had used one to flee the scene of the bombing and to ram-raid a bank a few hours later. -- Last edit: 2020-05-09 06:47:32 |

The car is really a 1970 cause if you look at the side markers 1972 they change the side markers on all the mopars to a pop out version this one does not have a pop out side marker and this car is a Special Edition model cause the vinyl top and the rear widow trim this car had a change grille and tail light panels cause Halicki the man who created this movie own a big junkyard in Long Beach that use the sense to shred the car which he own all the cars they he use for the stolen cars in the movie some he converted a older model to the one he wanted to be year that he cannot get for the movie. |

So they take a 70 Challenger, Swap the Grille, Headlights, and Bumpers to make it a 73, but with Eleanor, the STAR of the Movie they only swap the Grille to make it a 73... Rather Pointless, dont you think? |

Its a 73 Because it has the 4 Taillights with the Backup Lamps on the Inside (Introduced in 72) and the Federally Madated 5mph Bumpers with the Rubber Tips (1973) HB Halicki bought these cars at Auction so he Probably bought it WITH the 70 Sidemarkers and the Non Correct Trim (Vinyl Roofs were a Common Aftermarket then), Or he Bought it without Trim and just Bought some from a Junkyard and Slapped it on -- Last edit: 2020-08-27 05:00:00 |

As so many people have said, and certain people are ignoring, is that this scene is actually dealing with three different 1970 Challengers, two being JS23UOE cars, which makes them both factory 440 Los Angeles-built cars, and JH23LOE, which makes that one a basic 1970 Challenger with a 383 two-barrel engine also built at Los Angeles. The updating of grilles and tail panels was very common with the Hollywood Challengers as Dodge wanted to promote their latest models, thus, 1970s and 1971s were retrofitted with 1972/1973 grilles and tail panels to make them look like the newer models - same was done with the Mannix Challenger convertible, the Mod Squad convertibles, and the seldom seen Brady Bunch blue Challenger convertible. Quit arguing about the grilles and taillights, it takes about 4 hours to swap those out. These are 1970 models that had reached the end of their Hollywood careers. |
