Not a '61 Plymouth - it's a '62 Chrysler. Note the wraparound taillights; the Plymouth used small round taillights mounted in pods on the fenders. |

The Chrysler side trim is also clear, especially the front fender. This is one of three cars that "disappear" during the opening sequence or are driven by New Yorkers who mind their own business. The Ford passes the furniture van, the VW, a white Plymouth (twice), a beige Dart (after passing the previous car the first time), this Chrysler wagon and the Imperial. We never see him overtake the Crumps' Plymouth. In the first helicopter shot, you can see Smiler overtake the Ford van, with the VW, Crump wagon, and Imperial all ahead. But the continuity breaks down a bit after that. |

Although this car never pulled over after Smiler's leap, it's possible that this was a brief stand-in for the Crumps' blue Plymouth station wagon- /vehicle_20267-Plymouth-Fury-Station-Wagon-1962.html |

I'm not convinced it's a Chrysler. It could be a 1962 Dodge Custom 880. I say that based on what appears to be a line of trim running the full length of the car under the door handles - Link to "www.stationwagonforums.com" |

Was this ever resolved? CougarTim's link is broken for me so I found another: 1962 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country 1962 Dodge Custom 880 Wagon Does look like it could easily be a '62 Dodge Custom 880 Wagon with that trim, as CougarTim said. |

Looking at this with fresh eyes and 7 more years, this is neither a New Yorker (as currently listed) nor a Dodge 880. It's a Newport. The script on the right side of the tailgate is a Chrysler feature. The Dodge 880 had DODGE letters centered under the tailgate handle: http://www.garceauauto.com/classiccarsmisc.html (scroll down). But this car has nothing below the tailgate handle. The New Yorker had 3 gold crowns there and less side trim, as shown by Reg's link. The Newport has a blank tailgate center and full-length side trim that matches the movie car: ![]() |
