I think so too. However in the movie the car has a normal firebird steering instead of the Trans Am's rally sports steering.

Hmm, and no rear spoiler either. Is it possible the car could have been ordered with the wheels, fender scoops & shaker hood as options, without going for the whole Trans Am package?

[edit] I've just seen the door mirrors, too. It's also possible that the car was 16 years old when the film was made, and had bee chopped around, had bits fall off, etc so isn't original anyway!!

It is a Trans Am. The "Shaker Hood" and "Waste Gates" on the fenders were only available on the Trans am. Spoiler was an option; although rarely seen excluded on Trans Am, some even came without the hood decal. The one shown is a 1978, only distinguishable in the photos by the narrow strip between the T top glass, the 1977 had significantly smaller T top glass leaving a larger space between them.

Were those "waste gates" functional?

I've personally never seen or heard of them actually doing anything.

Well, I just can't get the whole idea of bying top of the line trim without spoilers and decals. Budget-minded racer would opt for Formula with performance options instead.

Some folks want the top of the line model, but also want to be low-key without spoilers and decals. Not many folks.
