Reo? Kaiser? AM General? |

With US military trucks, it's probably best to think about models rather than manufacturers, since some models (e.g. the M-35) had various different manufacturers over the years. |

Trucks in back: International Harvester L-Series, maybe a GMC, Dodge D-Series. |

And something for IMPDb on the right. |

I couldn't spot any difference from full frontal view and it's got standard M-35 front end so why not REO by default ? http://i81.servimg.com/u/f81/11/91/91/97/019_310.jpg -- Last edit: 2014-04-06 22:29:54 |

I thought that by default we were listed these as AM General edit: but as you said on the forum: I do not know then -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 18:27:43 |

then AM General IMO we could just throw a coin ![]() REO ceased to exist in 1975 -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 18:31:42 |
◊ 2014-04-07 19:14 |
So AM General made them from 1975 onwards? |
◊ 2014-04-07 20:31 |
a detailed article about this truck but nothing is really mentioned about exact production http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.asp?armor_id=62 just that was produced by Kaiser, REO, AM General and KIA for South Korea also some produced by Bombardier in Canada dumno the big fuss , we can list it either as RIO or AM General none is wrong but many are already listed as AM General then maybe we should list this the reaming M-35 ones too -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 20:33:54 |

The M-35 was made from 1950 onwards but AM General was formed in 1971, so we should definitely not list all M-35s as AM General. We already have a problem with M-35s in films made before 1971 being listed as AM General. -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 20:46:10 |

then how about this convention , if movie dates after say after 1975 it's AM General if its before 1975 it's REO by default unless it can be proven to be Kaiser or Stubaker does this sound fair ? and for a admins should be about 2 minutes to check all listed M-35 -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 20:52:36 |

Kaiser (later Kaiser Jeep) was absorbed by AMC in 1970. So AM General have been making these for the US military since 1975. Bombardier has only been making a licensed version for the Canadian military, which must be much smaller than the USA's, so unless anyone can find out how else to identify them, I too think the make should be AM General by default for ones in any movie/TV program made well after '75. Though I don't know how long most of these were/are kept in service (could be a lot of years) -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 21:39:46 |

well we could change the year, say 1985 ,we could assume that those show up in 1975-1985 production could be surplus leftovers from earlier producers in which case all those could be renamed to REO there are 11 pages of AM General M-35, but shouldn't take long to change them to REO those pre 85 what you think of this ? looks like the M109 "Van" version, perfectly matches an M-35 except that grill and lights /vehicle.php?id=575255 -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 21:06:43 |

I'm sorting this out now. There's quite a few Reos but I'll leave all the ones from movies made before or shortly after 1975. |
◊ 2014-04-07 21:27 |
Come to think of it, the ones used in movies and TV shows mostly must be ex-service so they'd be far from new and could be decades old. Oh, what should we do... -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 21:27:47 |
◊ 2014-04-07 21:33 |
then let's go radical , 1995 any pre 1995 AM General gets convereted to REO , also perhaps some filmed in Canada are actually Bombardier |
◊ 2014-04-07 21:38 |
Sorry, I was wrong - It merged with Willys-Overland that year and was renamed Kaiser Jeep in 1963 and carried on until it was bought by AMC in 1970. http://www.amgeneral.com/corporate/history.php |

Sorry, but that's too arbitrary. -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 23:07:23 |

Almost all military trucks from that period utilize same cab, hood, grille and fenders. Military standartization, you know. Are you capable to differentiate M35 from M54?)) |

found this pic for comparison, they are the same except the M35 is much smaller...![]() |

More info: http://olive-drab.com/od_mvg_www_deuce_m35.php What I've gathered so far: Reo was the company that first designed them, in 1949. They entered production the following year. Reo went bust in 1975, so from then on the M-35 range was produced by AM General. Production finished in 1988. In 1993 or 1994 the Extended Service Program began in which existing M-35s were disassembled and rebuilt with certain parts replaced or upgraded (see bottom of the page at olive-drab.com for more detail) but no new ones were produced. This continued until 1999. I can't find anywhere that discusses Kaiser/Kaiser Jeep producing M-35s apart them being just being listed one of the manufacturers, so I have no idea what percentage of pre-1975 were made by Reo or Kaiser Jeep. Reo seems to be a separate company to Kaiser Jeep or AMC (of which AM General was a subsidiary). -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 22:22:23 |

I think the 2 on the right are M939's (5 ton weight class rather than 2.5) -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 22:25:58 |

I couldn't find any fool proof way to distinguish M-35 and M-54 so some M-54 on this sites may have been mis ID for M-35 !! but as you can see in comparison they are like SHOES , the M54 is same just 1 or 2 numbers bigger... |

From http://olive-drab.com/od_mvg_www_deuce_m39.php : "The cab design of the M-39 series five ton trucks was shared with the M-35 series 2 1/2 ton trucks, so both have a very similar look. However, the M51, M52, M543 and late-production M62 have two fuel tanks, one on each side, while the M-35 series have only a passenger side tank. The M41 Cargo Truck had single rear wheels with 14:00x20 tires as opposed to the M54 Cargo Truck with its 11:00x20 tires and duals on the rear axles. Both had the standard wheelbase of 179 inches." -- Last edit: 2014-04-07 22:39:07 |

Speaking of which, could anyone (not specifically you) sort out all the RVs that are listed as GMC Motorhome? They need more accurate names e.g Palm Beach or Birchaven. ![]() |
