I don't really see anything special about the design. Not much different than a Saturn anyways.

True the EV1 never did break any design barriers, but it was more efficient then any Saturn could ever hope to be. The GM EV1 would have change the automotive world, if it had been given the chance. General Motors was ahead of the game with their GM Ultralite concept car (it could get close to 100mpg) and the EV1. However, they opted to dump their funding into their SUVs… So now look at GM, they are having to play catch-up to get to where the other car companies are… :/

80 miles and then hours of recharging doesn't really qualify as "efficient" in any sense of the word.

The electric car was simply a dead-end. Alternative fuels are much more plausable.

I meant "efficient" as in the car had ZERO emissions. The car also got ZERO miles per gallon (But
in this case, that’s a good thing) and used ZERO gasoline… The car was a working
progress, that unfortunately was not given time to progress. So sure it had its flaws, but
I think the car is more than worthy of the title "efficient".

Technically, it wasn't zero emissions, either, considering that the electricity that powered it came from power grids. The more electricity is used, the more must be produced, and most electricity is produced by burning coal.

That movie was so sad.... I cried and cried. I am so sensitive when it comes to cars being smashed.... especially when they don't deserve it.

I admit a certain amount of morbid curiosity regarding what sort of thought processes led you to that conclusion.

Yes, but if everyone used electric cars, the entire world could use NOTHING but coal in their power plants and we'd still have about 30% less emissions than now. And we can only imagine what it'd be like if governments could stop focusing on oil wars and improve/diversify power plants.

It's irritating how often the EV1 is referred to as "fast" in this movie, and how the press releases for the movie called it "one of the fastest....cars ever built". The EV1's acceleration (0-60 in about 8 seconds) was no better than average for the time period....Toyota Camry V6 territory, and it only topped out at 80. That would have only qualified as "zippy" during the 1950s, for crying out loud.

These were released in November 1996. Shouldn't we consider 1997 to be the first model year?
