Ex Wikipedia: - In March 1950 Nuffield Australia opened a new, 57-acre (230,000 m2) assembly and building factory in Zetland, New South Wales on the site of the Victoria Park Racecourse. The facility was established to assemble Morris Minor and Morris Oxford models which had previously been imported into Australia. Attribution in Wiki: - The Macquarie Dictionary of Motoring, 1986, page 337 Since total 6/80 production was only about 25,000 it seems unlikely that in country manufacture would occur, since the car was then a fairly mature design in production since 1948. Wiki says assembly, presumably of kits, took place in Victoria Park Australia, and quotes BMC-Leyland Australia Heritage Group, Building Cars in Australia, 2012, page 38. -- Last edit: 2014-01-13 16:30:03 |

Of the 24,886 Wolseley 6/80s produced between 1948 - 1954, a total of 10,455 went for export to many countries with Australasia taking the far largest share. Vehicles were shipped from England either as complete cars or in complete knock-down (CKD) form. This latter method basically involved assembling cars from crates of parts (including separate engine units)which were then all fitted to a bare body shell which itself had also been shipped out separately. Special assembly plants carried out this work. Incidentally, CKD cars are identified by their unique series of Chassis / Body Nos. |
